Had none of our games been postponed or rescheduled, would we really be having this conversation? The season would have been over, minus a bowl game. Based off of our team’s performance this season we shouldn’t even be bowl eligible (I understand all teams are eligible this year). What does he need to prove at this point? If we were undefeated and the season was on the line, then I could see the point in being upset but that’s just not the reality of the situation. He helped us win a natty. Best of luck to the guy going forward as I am sure he will represent LSU very well in the league. He just made a million dollar decision that only he could make.

exactly, “millions of dollars and your life dream ahead of you, the whole reason you came to a place like LSU. Would hate to have it cut short due to injury, because we know you’ve had injury problems in the past.”

would it not be the same discussion you have with your kid when he is 8 and wants to quit the the basketball team mid season? You tell him that he made a commitment and its unfair to the rest of his teammates and the other kids that wanted to be on the team for him to quit midseason.

this is destroying college football the players should have a chance to opt out before the first game after that they should have to play. they are letting the players run the whole show

I’d privately discuss how we are going to pay back a portion of the scholarship.

Needs to be some sort of penalty

Quick to say how much players do for the school, plausible to say it’s reciprocal

Don’t you think athletes especially football have leg up on regular students?

So I cant get pissed because a player quit

Sure. Just know that your opinion on this is irrelevant. The only opinion that matters in this is the individual players. They owe you nothing. They owe LSU nothing.

In what way specifically that isn’t also beneficial to the school?

How exactly are you going to force a player to play? In this case we are talking about a receiver. What if he goes to the line of scrimmage and just stands there when the ball is hiked? What are you going to do then? What if he sits on the sideline and refuses to go in? What are you going to do? Nothing. Because there isn’t a damn thing you can do about it.

Honestly, I don't think the NFL really cares. They view college football as simply a minor league system. If a player is physically ready to be drafted on 11/29 of his junior season, the scouts/GM's, etc don't care if he plays in 3 more games or not. They understand that there is another level above college football and won't "penalize" a guy for protecting his investment.

Now, that's not to say they wouldn't look more favorably on a guy who stuck it out with his team even though there was virtually nothing to gain by doing so. It's just that "opting out" won't penalize a great player as much as we think.

It is frustrating as a college fan because WE wouldn't dream of quitting on our favorite team. But players don't see it that way. They don't look at it as an "honor" to play college football. Just a necessary step to get to the real goal...NFL riches. As quick as they can get through college football, the better.

Agreed, I don't think it will hurt his stock at all. But I do think the question will be asked on why he chose to leave when he did. It's not like he chose to forgo his junior year altogether or opt out of his bowl game.
