Frozen Haddock Filets in New Orleans

Title says it all. Trying to scratch an itch and fry up some beer battered haddock and chips this week. Used to fry up these dinners in a hole in the wall bar in the Midwest a lifetime ago. Salty and covered in malt vinegar. Anywhere in New Orleans to get some frozen haddock fillets?

Quick google search says wal mart carries them.

Yeah I saw that but then went into the wal mart grocery pickup app and it was nowhere to be found. I’ll check Whole Foods today, thanks.

Why not just use whatever is fresh around you? Redfish? Trout? Catfish?

North Atlantic haddock is the traditional/preferred fish for classic beer battered fish and chips. Using redfish or catfish would be akin to using bratwurst in a gumbo down here. Not that it would be bad, but it wouldn’t scratch the same itch. (Ok maybe it would be bad.)

Cod is more traditional as jews from Portugal brought fried fish to the UK. Cod is more popular than haddock in the UK as well although I believe haddock is preferred in the north of the UK. I prefer haddock myself.

I believe I saw some in the seafood case at Costco, the case where they have the Dungeness crabs

You are going to be dissappointed if you use frozen cod or haddock over fresh local seafood. You just need something somewhat similar in texture and size. Catfish doesn’t do as well for instance because normally it is thin filets.
Haddock is good in beer battered fish, but it’s not used because it’s the best it’s used because that’s what’s available in the UK.

Updating this as I finally found frozen Haddock in stock at Whole Foods on Vets after my 3rd or 4th try. Just in time for lent.

Friend,
Cod is more traditional in England, but in Scotland, where the fish and chips are vastly superior, haddock is used. Cod makes for a much slimier product. If you find fresh haddock in the NOLA area, please let me know where.
