Car insurance question

Say we had a car hit a parked car and there is ~$1400 damage.
The car hit didn’t get police involved and info was exchanged.
Would it be best to just pay them that amount and not get insurance involved? Thinking future rates may go up due to it and may be best in long run to not get insurance involved.

What if they take your $1400 then sue you?

No police=no accident

How do you know their auntie wasn’t in the back seat?

If your the “at fault” party, it may be in your best interest. Otherwise it won’t hurt you to make a claim.

So can't sue us if no accident?

We were the at fault party.

Rates will definitely increase and that incident affects you for three years.

Your rates could go up but that is pretty minimal damage. The claim stays for 3 years with most companies and so does any surcharge.
You probably will end up paying less if you go with the insurance aspect but it does stay on your record.

I'd pay it myself (get a signed release of claims in exchange).
I went through insurance for $800 worth of damage I caused one time to another vehicle and they hiked my premiums by $400 a year for about 5 years.

quote:Dumb. It amazes me that people don't call the police or get insurance involved when accidents happen. You're putting a lot of faith in someone you've never met to do the right thing.

Never do that

Signed release of claims...should my insurance company also be covered by this release agreement?

I hit a guy from behind once (no homo) and just paid to repair the damage. Worked out better for everyone.

If you want to keep an at-fault accident off your record (for 3-5 years depending on carrier) and keep your premiums from going up, then just pay it out of pocket.
If you do pay it out of pocket, make sure they haven't already opened a claim with your insurer and then get some sort of release signed by them saying that in consideration of payment of $1400 that the issue is considered resolved by all parties involved. And that there were no occupants in the vehicle at the time of the accident.

Get them before they get Gordon

They can still make a claim with your insurance, and they may also be able to deny your claim if you’ve made an offer to settle. Read the Insured’s Duties under your policy. There may also be hidden damage to their car.

this is exactly what they will do and deny they ever got anything from you while magically you find out they had 6 family members in the car who all went to doctors and need the maximum medical payout from your insurance.
then your insurance drops you for not calling police and filing a claim so you cost them all that money because you are an idiot
