That's a naive statement. Sammy took the abuse because he got paid a lot of money to do it. He laughed all the way to the bank.
horseshite. When Sammy married a white woman in the 50s - very taboo - Frank and the gang stood beside Sammy. Also, there were times on the road Sammy wasn't going to be allowed to stay in the same establishments as Frank and Frank threatened to leave until Sammy was cleared to stay. Sammy didn't just hang around because of the money.

I'm standing by my assertion that it didn't age well.
A bunch of guys making racist jokes at each other because they're friends doesn't make it automatically funny. Maybe back then it was funny to watch people comfortable enough with each other to make those jokes. Today it just seems weird. Comics today would have absolutely fricked with him about his eye, or satanic orgies. But about his race? No. Not because it's taboo, but because nobody cares.
Comedy has moved beyond that era. It didn't age well. That's all I'm saying.

Katt Williams tried to address that roast, without comment, in one of his specials.
He was asked to stand on stage as Flav was dropped from the ceiling on a wire and yell out "Oh look, its a flying monkey!" And he felt horrible about it and asked Flav "How on Earth can you do this racist shite?" and Flav said "CUZ THEY GOTS TO PAY ME, BOI!"
He says it like a punchline, but as I said, with no comment on whether Flav is bad for bojangling for VH1 money or smart for hustling, or...is the story not even true and Katt is just clowning on Flav, doing his own racist dance.

If you think the drunks at the Friars Club aged poorly, I strongly suggest you watch the "roast" at the wrap of The Richard Pryor Show and get back to us.

I thought you weren't all in to the PC stuff. Your stance in this thread says otherwise.

Comedy is in a dark period (no pun intended) right now. I'd say it's regressed.

Jimmy Kimmel actually said that.... but Greg had some serious zingers that night.
Ice-T, you're so old, the first thing you bought with your record deal money was your freedom.
You look like a skeleton wrapped in electrical tape (to Flava Flav).
Being a pimp ain't easy, especially when you gotta stand on phone books to smack a bitch (to Katt Williams).
He went into that night saying he wasn't gonna say anything that was already said by Michael Richards.

Sinatra also took Sammy in after his car accident and had him recuperate in his home. Sinatra also took credit for getting Sammy back on his feet and adjusting to living with no depth perception. Sinatra took credit for a lot of stuff, but how he treated Sammy as a friend is accepted as fact.

I always heard Dean Martin was the king of cool. However, in these roasts, he is quite visibly drunk. But not a "cool drunk", an "unprofessional" sort of drunk. I guess they just rolled old Dean out there and said, "Drink up handsome, you'll do fine." It was sad.

Dean was a Pig Bottom and Sammy was a BBC Top so it all worked out in the end didn't it?
Posted on 10/28/20 at 11:06 am to BitBuster
Sammy's fake laughing was the same kind of act at Martin's fake drunkeness.

What's your feeling on Andy Taylor?

If Dean Martin wasn't drunk, and he was acting, he deserves an Oscar. Seriously.
They trotted out Foster Brooks to make all the jokes as the fake drunk.
Man some of you guys are triggered. Sorry to call out your heroes. I'm merely pointing out, that while it may have been the height of comedy at its time, it doesn't work today.

Says the guy who started the thread and is so concerned about jokes dealing with race. A certain phrase uttered by Queen Gertrude comes to mind.

They aged wonderfully.
The people roasting Sammy loved him dearly.
These roasts are light years funnier than anything being put out by Hollywood today.
Go and change your tampon while I go to Youtube and look up some old Don Rickles clips.

That dude was never drunk, he just acted drunk. That was his thing. Sang like a champ though.

I recently did a deep dive on Deano. The guy pushed out albums in multiple ethnicities and genre, tapping into multiple markets. He had his French album, his Latino album, his "Tex" Martin country albums, and of course his Italian albums.

He drank Mott's Apple Juice on stage.
He was generally the first one in bed around 9ish, because he played golf every morning.
