The population of San Quentin state prison has been ordered to be reduced to less than half its capacity by a California appeals court.

The Associated Press reports that the court cited “deliberate indifference” to the coronavirus pandemic’s effect on the prison population in its decision. Unless prison officials successfully appeal the decision, they will have to transfer or parole about half of the roughly 2,900 inmates currently at San Quentin, the news service noted.

They should drop the prisoners off in front of the judge’s house and in their neighborhood

San Quentin is no joke. That's where the most severe offenders in California go and that's also where they house their Death Row inmates. It's also presently home to the world's largest collection of serial killers.

Interested to see how this shakes out as most of the inmates there are probably in for very serious crimes such as rape and murder.

I guess they'll have to draw straws to see which 50% get the death penalty?

Oh goodie. Now everybody is even more likely to get robbed, raped, assaulted and the cartels can even further their reach. Thanks, Libs.

Judges consistently make the mistake that legislators will “do the right thing“. Here we have a judge who disagrees with the executive branch on how to operate the prison during the Covid outbreak. The court knows that it’s ruling is unreasonable and that the administration cannot reduce the prison by 50% capacity without legislators intervening from a budgetary standpoint ( fund more prisons or low security facilities like half way houses). I’ll bet you a dollar that the legislators will never agree on how to respond to this ruling and as a result the executive branch will have no choice but to comply and begin to release prisoners so that the court does not hold them in contempt. It’s idiotic. I have seen this happen thousands of times with judges. This is an example of legislating from the bench As the judge has no means to control either the operation or budget of the prison, but issues a ruling that clearly impacts it without regard to its impact upon the rest of the state.

They have to let the prisoners out since everyone else is fleeing the state.

You can cut it by 700 just by actually utilizing the death penalty instead of just keeping a bunch of guys under death sentence until they die of old age.

Good for the "for profit" prisons that will catch the overflow.
