I get it. When I mention something to my sons from the 90's or 80's, I have to do the math in my head and think, "Ok...this is to them what a movie from 1950 would have been to me."

Yeah the Dazed and Confused example always breaks my brain
Dazed and confused is further away from today than the movies release date was away from the actual day the plot takes place

Right...when I played Back to the Future for my 13 year old, it had come out 22 years before he was born. Since I was born in 1970, that would have been a movie like Red River!
