School District Kicks Siblings Out For Currently Living Somewhere Else

I don't see any winners in all of this, especially the children. From the article:

quote:
Can you visit a friend or relative in another state for an extended period while your kids keep up with their classes and school work online?
quote:
On Thursday, Emmette received an email from Camille Johnson, Auburn’s assistant superintendent for student services, saying she has determined his two sons “are not entitled to the public schools of the district.”
In the email, the administrator says Emmette told the district in late August the family had planned to return to Auburn from their vacation in Missouri over Labor Day weekend, but due to a wedding at the end of September decided to remain in Missouri.
The administrator says in the email the district allowed the two boys, a second-grader and fourth-grader, to continue remote learning.
However, Emmette and his kids still haven’t returned, and mail sent to him was returned to the district, the email says. It also states that Emmette told the district he didn’t have a set date to return, and told them he was renting out his home when possible on AirBnB.
"Renting out your home is contrary to an intent to return to Auburn in the near future‚'’ Johnson says in the email Emmette shared with Syracuse.com | The Post-Standard.
quote:
Emmette, who works as a podcast host on youtube and restores furniture, said he didn’t have a date in mind to return, but would have come back at least by January. He said if the elementary schools were five days a week in person, he would return, but he doesn’t want his kids to go on a hybrid schedule.
quote:
Emmette said he was outraged and shocked when he received the email. He said the weather is nice at his aunt’s home in Missouri and it’s somewhat isolated, so he and his kids feel safe from the coronavirus pandemic.
“Are you kidding me?'' he said. “I never thought there was any problem. I pay my taxes and my mortgage, and my home is not for sale. I didn’t move. And my kids do all their work on Zoom as I have chosen for them to be fully remote.”
quote:
Auburn is on a hybrid schedule where students learn in school some days and remotely the other days. Parents in New York state, however, are allowed to choose if they want their children to learn all remotely.

He says he didn’t move, but he’s renting his home out. Just admit you moved dude

Rules are rules. It I don't feel too strongly on this one though, what is being hurt by this kid logging on from Missouri? A big meh, they can figure it out.

Not sure why the school system just doesn't let it play it once schools return to full time.

I don't get it either. I guess to spread the kids out but it's not sustainable, just get on with it.

If he’s paying resident taxes for that school district, his kids should get educated there.

On Airbnb
Are you unfamiliar with the concept?

It's kinda weird, unless the kids aren't attending the online sessions I'm not sure why the district would have such an issue. My district here in AZ is hurting for funds and doing all they can to keep students enrolled for funding, over there I guess they are rolling in it.
Probably more to the story here.

Sooner or later a viable remote learning model will emerge (especially for older kids), where the absolutely best teacher in the nation will be able to host a meeting for unlimited number of kids. Homework, exams and things like experiments could be farmed out locally similar to large-format classes in university.

Think about the inverse as well. He isn't paying taxes in MO (particularly any related to schools), but the other school thinks MO citizens should pay for his kids.

New york...checks out
This is the kind of common sense that is being promoted across the nation

If the kids are doing their work and attending zoom classes, why does it matter if they are in Auburn or New York when they do the work?

Tons of students I know are doing class in other countries. Admins are so dumb sometimes

They are using tax resources and not paying taxes in the district. School districts have to police this especially if next to a less than desirable district. Otherwise you’d have tons of people trying to live outside the district and attend the better schools.

If they were fully online it wouldn’t be a big deal.

I don’t care where he lives. He is paying property taxes so he is entitled to the school he is paying for.

I wouldn’t ever tell my school district we weren’t in town. Not their business.

This should be the driver if they aren't doing in person classes.

I guess being anti-school choice is one of those authoritarian things the OT loves?
