In the orange light of late afternoon, a mile-long Army convoy of 33 heavily loaded trucks crossed a bridge over the Tigris River into the dusty, trash-strewn streets of Al Amarah, Iraq. Sgt. Stuart Redus was at the wheel of a boxy old big-rig, 28th in line, with Staff Sgt. Fernando Torres in the passenger seat. Plates of rusty steel were bolted to the doors, a kind of homemade armor, but the truck, hauling a shipping container full of weapons, was otherwise unprotected. They had no radio or satellite phone in the cab, just a store-bought walkie-talkie hanging from a bungee cord.

On a wide boulevard in the center of town, they heard a pinging noise, like the first drops of rain. Then it was like a thunderstorm broke open: Bombs exploded, and fire and smoke erupted from under the pavement, followed by the deep thumping of machine guns. Curses and static came over the walkie-talkie. Redus pinned the gas pedal to the floorboard as a rocket grenade exploded behind the cab, shredding the air lines to the rear axle and knocking both men unconscious. The tractor-trailer jackknifed and slammed sidelong into a Jersey barrier. Redus came to and tried to force the truck into gear, but it wouldn’t budge. He shouted into his handset, “Help, help, we’re hit!”

Up ahead, they saw the red taillights of the convoy bouncing away in a cloud of gun smoke and diesel exhaust. Directly behind them, a military dump truck neared their position, but rather than scoop them up, it blew past at top speed. As did the following Humvee, its machine-gunner cowering in the turret, then another dump truck and another Humvee. The last vehicle in line was an eight-wheeled wrecker, with a crew of three, whose job it was to recover disabled trucks. Each of them later told Army investigators that they didn’t see anyone moving in the downed rig, but Redus claims he locked eyes with one of them. The wrecker slowed, almost to a stop, then sped off, its tow tackle jangling empty.

Redus screamed into the walkie-talkie, but the convoy had gone out of range. Through the wreckage of the back window, Redus and Torres saw dozens of masked men streaming out of buildings and alleys, pumping their rifles and rocket launchers in triumph. Redus turned to Torres and said, “Grab all your fricking ammo, dude.”

Needs to be a movie, and makes you really think about the blind worship of every soldier.

I didn't read it but, I have a friend that would go out at night on his own when we were in Baghdad in 2003. He is from armenia and would go out and do God knows what. Eventually he was found out and they put him on constant guard until they could send him home.

Good article until I realized it was Rolling Stone. Let’s not forget that they have been legally found multiple times to have flat made shite up.

Everything was a shite show in 2004. The mad max armor, not having the right crap to do your job because of outdated MTOEs. Sometimes you forget that sort of shite. Seems like such a long time ago.

Sounds like typical Army shite.
It happens more often than you would think.

Army leadership set that LT and his convoy up for failure. What should be noted is the author does state the LT questioned the route to his leadership as the route was listed as black, and they told a green LT to run it with no direct support arranged whatsoever. That is crazy. A complete breakdown of Big Army leadership. Most of the time, the Big Green Weanie just hangs the Company Grade Officer out to dry. In this instance, the LT had them by the balls because he questioned the route to leadership. I should state I know Facundo. He is intelligent, a good leader, and just a good dude. Hate that this incident occurred at all when it did not have to happen....

Damn, realities of war are always so interesting. Being a non-serviceman, I won’t comment on any of the left behind stuff because it seems I didn’t even have the guys to join the service and I’m not a hypocrite but those two guys are fricking bad arse men. They weren’t getting taken easily? That’s for sure. Then, they both rejoined. Jeez, that surprising.

Reading that, it boggles the mind that leadership blatantly puts those men is obvious danger.

Watched The Outpost last night and the whole time I’m left asking wtf?! Why?!

Then, at the end they tell you how new directives were sent out to close indefensible locations......how many people died to deduce that?!?!
