it is a numbers game. You go to 100 of these for every 1 that pays off big.
If you are a novice.
I can tell by which neighborhood the sale is in, if I’m even going or not.
Most Saturdays, I only go to 2-3 sales. I’m not driving all over BR, looking through tons of junk, bought at Hobby Lobby, Kirkland’s, and Walmart, hoping to find one thing.
I pick my sales wisely. I hit upper middle class (or higher) neighborhoods/areas that are at least 50 years old.
Shanadoah is 50+ years old and may have a dozen garage sales on one weekend, but I’m not going. It’s mostly middle class, and of the 12 garage sales, one may have some good stuff.
Now Kenilworth/Magnolia Woods are middle class & 50+ years old as well, but I’ll shop there. Mostly because it’s surrounded by a ton of upper middle class neighborhoods. I’ll hit those first, than Kenilworth before heading home.
I usually plan to hit one garage that looks the most promising in the ad. If it says “Household items” or HH, baby items, etc, I avoid them.
I look for key words like antiques, tools, old toys, books, misc, collectibles, etc.
if the ad says “Baby items, toys”, the toys are always new baby/kids’ toys.

He either robbed a Bass Pro, is getting divorced and didn’t want his wife to have shite or owes some drug dealers a hellacious amount of money to be selling all that so cheap.

The Arai helmet and Sidi shoes are very high quality items.
I’d like to meet the guy that had all of this shite. Arai helmet, Sidi shoes, $120 bass rods with the tags still on, multiple knives still in the original packaging. This guy either has money to burn or a serious addiction to shoplifting.

You'll have to wait till next weekend, or he'll find a set of everlast gloves autographed by Muhammad Ali and another set autographed by Joe Frazier and only pay about seven bucks for each one.

Unfortunately I work days next weekend, so no garage sales.
I’ve never found a Muhammad Ali autograph, but I’ve found many autographed items for $1, including team signed LSU hat with Wally Pontif, small basketball signed by Pete Maravich and his dad, Jimmy V autobiography, and “Lost Moon” book by Jim Lovell.

I don’t know. I need to get a Nikon battery charger because the battery is dead.

That’s what I’m wondering. He’s either a kleptomaniac or impulse buyer. Funny thing is, his highest price stuff was his used camping equipment. He had stoves, tents, hammocks, etc, and they were priced high for me.

The guy has two houses on his property. I’m thinking he may have been renting out the other house, and the renter bailed on him. So he sold the contents of the house.

Good for you. Whoever priced that had no idea what they were doing.
I jealous about the vortex binoculars. I’m looking at getting a new pair for deer season.

I follow the Cincinnati picker on YouTube.
I started watching some of his videos, as well as another guy, Thrift Mine.
Now, they buy junk. They are buying stuff for $1-$5, hoping to get $20 for it.
Now granted, that’s how I started nearly 20 years ago.
I’m watching their videos and yelling at the screen, “You dumb arse, look down, there sits $100+!!!”
He passed up a large lot of “Little People” toys. I saw the barn, the school, and the jet, plus a box with more stuff in it.
Thrift Mine passed up a snow board. Depending on the brand, they can be big money, and they were in a rich neighborhood, so it was a good chance.
I look at every skate board I come across. Some of the vintage stuff brings big money. I’ve made a couple thousand dollars over the years just on skate board, $500 just before Covid, from one garage sale.

How/where do you resell?
Posted on 9/29/20 at 6:43 am to theantiquetiger
Do you have any strategies for ebay? Offering "free" shipping etc?

No, I don’t do free shipping, but I do start my auctions low and take any offer thats close to the low end of what it sells for.
If I have something that sells for (let’s say) $100-$120, I’ll take $80-$90 all day long, because I have very little into it.

Lol the 1980s called and wants their Time clipless pedals back.
Plenty of roadies still use Time pedals. They are 4th in the market behind Shimano, Look, and Speedplay. Those Xpresso 6 are still made and the ones he has are maybe 3-4 years old.

I've got one. If you let me borrow it, I'll check the functionality and let you know. :)
