Rep. Matt Gaetz warned billionaire Michael Bloomberg that he may be facing a criminal probe for paying the outstanding fines and fees of 32,000 convicted felons in Florida so they could regain their right to vote ahead of the November election.

Speaking to Fox News’ “Hannity” Tuesday evening, Gaetz (R-Fla.) said he had spoken to Florida Attorney General Ashley Moody prior to his appearance on the show about Bloomberg’s voter effort in the Sunshine State.

quote:

To Gaetz and Moody, however, there are legal concerns regarding Bloomberg’s political spending in this specific case.

“I believe there may be a criminal investigation already underway of the Bloomberg-connected activities in Florida,” Gaetz told Sean Hannity.

“[Under Florida law] it’s a third-degree felony for someone to either directly or indirectly provide something of value to impact whether or not someone votes. So the question is whether or not paying off someone’s fines and legal obligations counts as something of value, and it clearly does. If Michael Bloomberg was offering to pay off people’s credit card debts, you would obviously see the value in that.

“When you improve someone’s net worth by eliminating their financial liabilities, that’s something of value. Normally, it would be very difficult to prove that that was directly linked to impacting whether or not someone was going to vote. But they literally wrote their own admission,” the Florida Republican argued, referencing a Washington Post report.

How many counts would this be, Matt?

Edit - 32000 counts. Even at a minimal punishment or fine, that’s a LOT of fricking counts.

Bloomberg is a billionaire. The rules don't apply to him.

Does Bloomberg have a significant presence in Florida?

If not, then the AG of Florida may not give a frick.

He can do this shite in NY state or somewhere else where he has a lot of pull with the state party, but not in most red states.

Wouldn't apply here. The felons Bloomberg is trying to help are the ones that have already served their time and are out as free citizens. The only thing keeping them from being "ex-felons" and eligible to vote is they need to clear up the financials obligations.

The good news is that he is dealing with FELONS. They are very trustworthy

"Hey, If I pay off all these debts, do you promise to go vote?"

'Yeah, man..whatever. Trust me. I'll vote.'

This is not paying for release. These people are already released but haven't paid fines and restitution. Only after the fines are paid are they given back their voting rights.

First: Bloomberg isn't paying off peoples debts directly. He's donating to a non-profit group whos purpose it is to restore peoples voting rights.

Second: Even if Bloomberg was paying off peoples fines directly, that simply makes someone eligible to vote. You aren't paying them to vote.

If you are paying someone (absolving them of debt) in order to make them eligible to vote, you have effectively bought their vote.

They’ll investigate this but nothing is going to happen unless one of them testifies that Bloomberg specifically told them he would pay it if they promised to vote for Biden.

Bloomberg isn’t running for president.

Doesn’t have to be. He is a representative of the Democrat party.

There have been street level workers for the party who have gotten busted before by offering inducements for people to vote that weren’t allowed. This is a high level party official publicly giving money for the express purpose of making people eligible to vote, which constitutes a monetary gift.

I think what Bloomberg is doing is discriminatory and disgraceful, but it’s not illegal.

There has to be proof of a quid pro quo. If there isn’t any proof...then this is going to be a big waste of time and tax payer money.

Anyone can pay the fees for a felon to reestablish their voting rights. There’s nothing illegal about it.

Not if if Biden or his actual campaign....then that’s different. But Bloomberg doesn’t run Biden’s campaign.
