Arik Gilbert

Arik Gilbert
quote:
Gilbert arrived on campus in January as the most highly-touted tight end in Tigers history – and the legend already has grown even though LSU still doesn’t open season until Saturday when Mississippi State visits Tiger Stadium.
Let’s start with Gilbert’s numbers – 101 pass receptions for 1,760 yards (that’s 117.3 yards per game) and 14 touchdowns.
Those weren’t his career numbers, just his numbers as a senior last season as he helped Marietta High School win the Georgia 7A state title. Those numbers earned him Gatorade High School Player of the Year Award.
As for his career numbers, they were 243 catches, 3,540 yards (90.8) and 35 touchdowns.
quote:
Safety JaCoby Stevens called Gilbert (6-5, 249 pounds) “a freak of nature.”
“He runs like a receiver,” quarterback Myles Brennan said, “but he has the body type of a tight end.”
Wide receiver Terrace Marshall, the Tigers’ No. 1 wide receiver after Justin Jefferson entered the 2020 NFL Draft and Ja’Marr Chase opted out of the 2020 season to prepare for the next draft, called Gilbert “eye candy.”

Miss St prolly already focusing gameplan around stopping him...

We got us a Darren Waller baws

Clyde was last season's big matchup problem. I think Gilbert is this years. In fact, I wouldn't be shocked to see LSU go two TE a lot (Gilbert and Carter), only with Gilbert actually being more of a WR. That could force teams to stay out of nickle because they'd have to be worried about LSU running between the tackles, but then force a safety or LB to spread out wide with Gilbert.

Not sure if it'll be Carter, but definitely will be a part of every gameplan

Thats exactly how NE used Gronk and Hernandez. You have to respect their blocking ability, but at the same time its like you still have 3 WRs.

I think one of the most underrated aspects of Moss's game last year was his blocking in the run game. That's probably the weakest spot of Gilbert's game (as it is for most Freshman TE's). We know Carter can block and is more than willing to do so. Plus, he might be a little better receiver than people give him credit for. It got called back because he pushed off, but he made a great catch on a high throw from Burrow vs. Miss. St. last season.
IMO, simply because of the personnel LSU is going to be more run-oriented than they were last season. Brennan doesn't have the experience and (likely) pocket presence of Joe right now. The OL is still built more like maulers than great pass protectors. And most importantly, none of the RB's are Clyde who excelled at making guys miss in tight space. Guys like Curry and TDP are more "downhill" runners who are better when they can get a head of steam heading to the line.
With Carter at one TE defenses are going to have to respect the LSU run game and likely keep an extra LB on the field. Otherwise, LSU might just run it down their throats. But if that extra LB is on the field you can flex Gilbert out as a WR were he would be a matchup issue for whoever the defense decides to cover him with.

I'm actually starting to get pumped. Just play football, LSU!

How can they focus a gameplan on stopping him? They have no clue how LSU will truly use him? I guarantee they will utilize him in more ways than any TE in the last 4 years (O's tenure).

I can see every team planning to make sure they don’t let arik beat them. But if you double him then what? Leave Marshall, Racey, Boutte or Palmer in one on one battles? All I can say is that yes, this offense will have some things to grow on, but they will be so damn dangerous at any given time.

Lol at the thought of a Mike Leach team defensively game-planning for anything.

Remember I said in January he was already better than moss and I got crushed on here

They won’t be able to stop him. They can only hope to contain him.

Leach gonna mix up his defenses for the Tigers...not intentionally, of course.

Man we’re gonna have some freakish athletes on the field. It’s not that we haven’t seen crazy speed on the field but idk if we’ve seen this type Of speed/size combination from so many. Marshall Racy Emery Gilbert.. then mix in Palmer Jontre Boutee. I have a feeling if Oline steps up and Myles stays healthy this offense is gonna be at the top end of the sec. schedule sets up nicely. Get MSU out of the way then there is a few weeks to work out issues and settle in for a massive clash with UF.

I like Clyde, but he, and every other skill player on last year’s offense, operated in the space made by the defense’s fear of Jamarr Chase. You could swap out any player on last year’s offense with Bama’s starter and it would be the same, except for Chase and Burrow.

Take a page from Belichick. Put a brute of a safety, like Jacoby Stevens, nose to nose with him, and brutalize him when he comes off the line. Punch, kick, spit on him, and hold him. Make the refs call you on it, and see if the kid has toughness. Jimmy Graham didn’t.

Speaking of running the ball, I think it took clyde a little while to get good AT running the ball out of the shotgun. Its great that our backs this year have only ran out of the gun. Idk what they ran out of in high school though.
Does anyone think we will have a package of plays for a 5minute offense that's under center. Meaning a grind the clock down offense. Last year we just ran out of the gun ,I wonder if they try some I formation with the occasional pa, to grind down the clock
