I'm one of the outliers. I have a wedding fund courtesy of my parents, but we're planning on getting hitched at City Hall, by ourselves (well, we'll have a witness).

I have stage fright, and bad anxiety, so the thought of both planning and starring in a wedding is my nightmare.

Plus, I can't imagine blowing that much money on one day. I can do SO MANY OTHER THINGS with it...take a badass vacation, put it towards a house, etc.

Marriage overall is changing. From what I’ve read, people are waiting until they are older to marry, there are less big/traditional weddings and the divorce rate is decreasing.

Not sure that trend will hold up, but that’s been the trend for a few years now.

My 50 year old brother 3 years ago. Didn't tell anybody but she posted it on FB.

Which is crazy. There aren't many bigger wastes of money than weddings and funerals.

Had a cousin “elope” about a month ago... This is the second marriage for both her and her new husband.

They were engaged, but the logistics of the wedding were getting kind of ridiculous. and they were tired of having to work around some of the agreements from their divorces (child care, sleeping over when kids are at the house, etc.), so they basically called up each of their parents at the first of the week, said hey we’re getting married at this location on Saturday. Be there if you can. It was a surprise to the rest of the world. I don’t think they even told siblings. Just parents.

It’s actually great. Took government out of marriage about as much as you can right now.

Almost as if starting off with one of the most retarded financial decisions means more down the pike. Money being the second leading cause of divorce after all.

My wife and I were engaged for a year and already living together. We started planning a wedding and decided it was too much of a pain in the arse and expensive. We canceled it and flew to Vegas a few weeks later and got married.

Same story here. We had all kind of added drama from my parents (her inlaws) - so we cancelled the wedding and went and did our own. Will be celebrating 10 years next month.

We've been married for almost 15 years now. I guess we didn't technically elope though. We went to Vegas to get married and it wasn't a secret or anything. We went by ourselves. Some little random Asian lady was our witness

We had a blast and saved a shitload of money

It really is the smart way to go about it. We've all been to those super expensive weddings where they go all out just to find out she was cheating on him or vice versa and the marriage is over with a year later.

Yep, nothing like starting your life out together with a huge pile of debt, unless some of the parents foot the bill.

My wife's parents don't have a lot of money. My dad has some but I'd have never asked him for a dime for a wedding. When we got back, he gave us a down payment for our first house as a wedding gift. Thanks pops
