Because the term gives them special recognition rather than just American which should be what everyone who is a citizen is called. Ninety-nine percent of blacks have never even visited any country in Africa.

And what percentage of African Americans could even find the continent of Africa on a map? How many of them could name 5 countries in Africa? How many of them speak an African language?
That being said, I don't GAF what they call themselves, or what anybody else calls themselves for that matter, and I make an effort to call people by whatever name they like. Who GAF?

Beause "Black Americans" would be closer to unity. Honestly, we should just call them "Americans". No modifier needed. *THAT* would be inclusive.

1. I don't know that all or even most of them do.
2. I think African-American came into fashion as other nationalities started hyphenating. So instead of being Italian or Polish people became Italian-American or Polish-American. Blacks could not really say there were Cameroon-American because most of them don't what their original country was (or what it would be in modern terms). So just the whole continent was used i.e. African-American.
It wasn't a divisive term. It was supposed to be term that honored where someone came from while noting we were all Americans.
But these things fall in and out of fashion.
