It came about shortly after a story on TV back in the 80’s (Dateline or 20/20 type show) about American soldiers that fathered children while serving in Vietnam. Then these children grew up and were trying to reconnect with their American fathers. Anyway, all throughout the show they referred to these kids as “Asian Americans”. Next thing you know the term African American was born.
