re: All 3 outside AC units not running *update pg 3!

I have 3 totally separate systems. I have never heard of a single thermostat for separate systems. Also, if there are separate thermostats for each one, how could that lead to the other units not turning on?

Is the breaker heating up under load?
Posted on 9/10/20 at 11:30 am to slacker130
It did not feel hot to me

Just seems like it's electrical to me and since all 3 are under that breaker, $50 and 10 minutes breaker swap might be a good first step.

any reputable A/ C tech can do the electrical side of an a/c system;however,an electrician typically doesn't do HVAC diagnosis. I think an electrician will wind up recommending the a/c tech. The number of things it "could be" is too much to start throwing parts at it. FWIW-I think you have an a/c problem. Good luck with it.
P.S.- I retired in March after 40 yrs as a automotive tech. I specialized in a/c and electrical work as well as diagnostics of engine, brake, and Air bag computer systems. I know automotive isn't the same as what you're dealing with. I can tell you the number of times I got vehicles that the customer put several parts on their car attempting to repair it and then bring it to the shop was a lot . Many times this happened. Just a piece of info for you. Again, good luck with it.

quote:I've been fooled before by the "click". The contactor can "click" and close but that doesn't mean the circuit serving the compressor and fan is hot. The control wire that closes the contactor is low voltage from the thermostat I think.
They are obviously getting power.
If I'm reading correctly, all three units are on one breaker? Could a bad cap on one unit throw the breaker for all three. Pull the disconnects to isolate the bad one maybe?

Yes, they're all on one. If there was a bad cap would that unit run at all?

I've heard a bad cap will throw the breaker but I have not experienced it myself on my a/c system.
I have had a bad cap throw the breaker on a 220v 5hp fountain before.
I think the easiest way to check your situation might be turn them all off and start one at the time?

With a dual run capacitor, if the herm (Compressor) side of the capacitor Is bad, the fan would run but the compressor would not, and if the fan side of the capacitor was bad, the compressor would run but the fan would not. In either case you would not have cooling from that unit. Of course if both sides of the capacitor was bad neither the fan or compressor would run. You said you had cooling from all 3 units when they are running so that doesn’t indicate a capacitor issue with any of the units. .

Ill bet its the battery back up on the thermostat. Crazy shite happens when they go bad, I 'm serious change them out.

Any update? I'm puzzled at this one.

Wow I would look into getting those 3 ac units off that common breaker

Just spray a little flexseal on that

Might even be able to knock it out with a little Flex Tape!

Now, you need figure out what caused that breaker to melt.

Yes, the plot thickens, but at least in comfortable, conditioned air

Explain to me where your 100! Amp wire splits. Are you hitting a junction box then splicing down or is that feeding a sub panel with 3 separate breakers in it?
