How does a movie like "The King's Speech" now qualify?
If you take this particular movie, the only way for it to qualify would be to inject some contrived scenes where you force some storyline from the British colonies and how they related to the storyarc that didn't actually occur in real life. That contrived storyline would then harm the overall quality of the movie.
It's so dumb.
Correct. They've basically torpedoed any movies based on European history. I guess directors can try to shoehorn some gay characters into the plot. But of course, it would be kind of awkward considering a character's sexual orientation rarely has a significant relevance to the plot of the movie.

Apparently more statues need to come down.

Didn't stop the director of Tombstone. Spent time pushing the 'Equal Work Equal Pay' thing also, though I'm betting that wasn't a big issue in the 1840s.

Probably part of the agenda, to divert big budget movies away from white historical story lines
You can make a fake movie about old Europe that won’t be good, you can pursue a movie that will be up for awards, or you can make a realistic European movie that won’t be up for awards.

This kind of shite is why Clint Eastwood and Spike Lee had it out around the time of Flags Of Our Fathers and Sands Of Iwo Jima.
“Why didn’t you put any black soldiers in your film?!?”
“Because there WEREN’T any black soldiers involved with Iwo Jima.”

Tombstone was based on reality, however loosely, and Curly Bill Brocius really was gay.
The sherif deputy who was gay? That may have been a frick you from the Earp family considering that person wrote an unflattering book about them in real life.

They said the same shite about Dunkirk

Ironically, Gone With the Wind would still be eligible.

An underrated C. Thomas Howell classic. How come it's so hard to find now?

Can we Make 1800s America movies with white slaves? Since we aren’t trying to be accurate but diverse and all
I feel underrepresented in those roles

Lord of the Rings: Return of the King (2003)
Most of the Uruk-hai had been killed off in the second movie, but there were still some left in the Return of the King.
Many Uruks were played by black Pacific Islanders and Polynesians.
Lawrence Makoare, a native New Zealander:
Played the Uruk-Hai Commander in the Fellowship movie, and then played the Witch King of Angmar as well as the Orc General Gothmog in The Return of the King.
And Sir Ian Mckellen, "Gandalf the Grey/White", is openly gay. I'd say they represented a fair amount of diversity. And for those who don't know much about him, John Rhys-Davies (played dwarf Gimli) has some very outspoken and strong held Christian beliefs.

What they will need to do is just have minorities play the part no matter the historical reality. It will be hilarious for historical stories or plays. Can you imagine if they did a show on the founding fathers of the US, and maybe for example had a black guy play Thomas Jefferson or Aaron Burr and maybe a Hispanic rapper play Alexander Hamilton?

If nothing else it would make for some interesting history papers from lazy students.
“George Washington was a black rapper with a jheri-curl wig who could not tell a lie, he slapped that bitch cause she owed him money.”

That was accidental. Sean Connery passed on the role.

I’m still sort of expecting The Academy to revoke Gone with the Wind’s Oscar for Best Picture.

If they are going to revoke a Best Picture win, I would start with Crash.
Posted on 9/9/20 at 5:33 pm to OccamsStubble
I thought they had to be main characters or at least significant characters.

Would have been a lot better with LBGTQ and/or black actors.
The burly red head was actually female.
