Robstown (TX) High School is catching national hell for their mascot’s name

But considering context, is it really racist? Local historians explain that the Robstown Cotton Picker pays homage to the predominantly Hispanic migrant workers who work in the cotton fields for which Robstown is known.
The name was even brought to a vote within the overwhelmingly Hispanic community, and it passed without a hitch.

So I guess the question is: In a community with next to no black residents, should something that is deemed offensive to a group not affiliated with the town be viewed the same by a varying ethnic enclave that takes pride in their heritage?

I rode by their high school a couple of weeks ago. They changed it but they are still the raccoons or at least that is what the band bus says.
I remember when the hookers were in trailers about where the Stonebrier Mall is now, good times (a friend says).

My dad grew up dirt poor in Bradley County, AR and picked cotton by hand as a kid. Why is it automatically assumed by white liberals "cotton picker" has racial connotations?
