Trump has not stood up for personal freedoms.

Of course Trump is being criticized by the left for not doing enough as far as coronavirus response. However, he has tacitly gone along with almost all of their wishes. He did leave most things up to the states as far as shutdowns(which I don’t necessarily disagree with). But overall he has not had the guts to come out and say the truth, which is that this thing is way overblown by the media. He has not condemned Governors enacting things like mask mandates under the guise of “emergency powers.” He also did not stand up against the $600 a week added unemployment from the federal government. 2016 Trump would have called it like it is. Many would have absolutely hated and ridiculed him to no end(which they do anyway), but many would have respected and felt refreshed to have someone not acting like a typical politician.

Yeah, that's why the democrats like him so much. Yep, that's it.

It's election year. Trump is talking to the middle.
What is he doing though?

Leaving things up to the states is one of the most conservative/libertarian things he could possibly have done. Nationwide mandates trample on the rights of everyone.
At least this way, each state is able to assess their situation and act accordingly.

I’m assuming you understand the concept of federalism.
Within that framework, what - specifically - should he have done differently?

Nah. At a white house press conference they showed a video of the media overreacting to all things chinese plague to the point they were furious and tried to say it was a campaign video.
That's when they decided to stop airing the briefings lol
