What is the biggest cross conference rivalry in pro sports?

I am having a hard time thinking of one. Most big rivalries are from location and familiarity. That usually lands you in the same division or at least conference.
Whah is a heated rivalry between two teams not from the same conference? And how did it develop if they play so seldom?
ETA: example college has many inter conference rivalries usually because of proximity but the nature of colleges conference system allows for this more frequently. Notre Dame USC is a rarity in that the schools are not very close and their rivalry is based almost totally on mutual respect and disdain for the others historic and comparable top level success over the lives of the programs.
ETA2: I am a complete idiot for not thinkIng of Lakers Celtics. Which is the second biggest

Probably something in NHL hockey if I’d have to guess. Might be Mets-Yankees now since interleague play started. Can’t say any NFL teams because they don’t play every year.

Hockey is what made me think of it. I’m watching now and I can’t really think of one. It’s east west so almost all local rivalries if not all are intra conference.
The red wings just went to the east so technically probably them and Chicago. But that’s sort of manufactured.

Cubs v White Sox
Twins v Brewers. I've been to several Twins v Brewers games. Ridiculous how crazy they are.

It's obviously Lakers/Celtics.
Counting the 40's/50's and 70's it's maybe Yankees/Dodgers as 2nd...but that hasn't been much of a rivalry for awhile.

I’m a Red Wings fan and I really don’t have a problem with Chicago. For me, I fricking hate the Avalanche.

Objectively the rivalry makes no sense.
But you hit the nail on the head. The unparralled success that became two historic programs meeting each other is sort of just happenstance.
I mean they started in the late 20s when Notre Dame was king and USC could've ended up being a nobody.
But both are Top 5 programs of all-time which is why the rivalry is about respect compared to OSU-Michigan.

Yeah. Very underrated. This is a carryover from Vikings-Packers and Badgers-Gophers. They used to be in the AL together but not in the same division. I know it's lost a lot of it's luster from the 70's, 80's, and mid 90's, but what about the Cowboys-Steelers?
ETA: I forgot the Brewers and Twins we're both in the AL Central together from 1994-97.

It’s honestly a travesty that the cowboys don’t play the Texans every season, but every 4.
Cowboys and the rest of the NFC East

For older people it may be Yankees Dodgers, but people under 60 don’t remember when the Dodgers were in Brooklyn.
