NWA is awesome.

My wife is from Birmingham. Too close to her family

Great strategy. Probably too many people for your requirements. We do have a large Louisiana contingent though. UAB hospital pulls a lot of medical talent from the state.

My family drove through Birmingham and Montgomery going down to Florida last week and all three cars independently had a conversation about how Birmingham seemed a lot bigger than they realized or remembered. It feels like a major city. That whole stretch was a lot more developed than I remembered it being.
The weird way the government classified the metro only has 1.1 m people. But there is actually closer to 1.6 million people in Central AL.

We visit 2-3 times per year so we'd like to be a day's drive away. My in laws are fine but my wife prefers to be several hours away from her sister and some of her extended family

Yeah, it is weird. The feds classified Tuscaloosa, Talladega, Anniston and Jasper as their own metro. But Birmingham is still the hub for those communities. For comparison, Nashville claims 14 counties. If Bham had that coverage, they would have similar populations.

One positive for NWA is a 2 hours flight to Denver. And you can realistically drive there too.

Hey fallguy, I Moved last year from just outside BR to Anderson SC, 20 miles or so down I 85 from Greenville. There are several lakes in close proximity to Greenville, I bought a house on Lake Hartwell and I absolutely love it here! Just outside Anderson, about 25 miles from Greenville is Clempson, lol, I libe about 7 miles from clempson stadium. So, if you want college atmosphere, there it is.
I came here because my sons live in Greenville. They love living in the downtown area and, that area is fantastic!
They both went to college in Arkansas and, through the many friends they made, became very familiar with North West Arkansas. They are very fond of that area, but they say there is absolutely no comparison to upstate South Carolina. The Greenville area has absolutely exploded over the last 10 years. If you haven’t been since 2009, you won’t recognize it!
There is so much to do/see here.
If you decide to make a trip, both my boys do air b&b and I plan to start that in the next month. We’d be glad to provide accommodations and they would be great “tour guides”.
I can’t emphasize it enough, you’ll likely not recognize that “sleepy little town”.
One last thing, there is SO much to do here!
And it’s so close to everything you could imagine wanting/needing in your life.

Will you sport your LSU gear everywhere and rub our nose in the fact that our football program sucks a johnson rod?

Thanks for the info. Does that area of SC get a little more seasonal weather than south Louisiana? I realize it still gets hot during the summer which I can live with.

You never completely feel like you leave the metro on the interstate between the two cities. Tuscaloosa is weird though. It’s not far away but it feels completely separate and kind of remote IMO. I guess that’s because it’s off the interstate.

LOL beaver, I wear my LSU gear everywhere every day and I get into so many conversations with the Clempson fans as well as the Clempson haters! It’s such a great way to meet people, and I’ve not had any poor reactions. Lots of Tarheels, game clocks and Georgia fans along with the Clempson fans.
Fallguy, there is a huge Clemson presence in the Greenville area.

Greenville, SC. You're closer to so much more (Atlanta airport, much bigger and better mountains, beaches, Charleston, Asheville, Charlotte, professional sports, and so on).
While I'm sure NWA Arkansas and the Ozarks are nice, it isn't as nice as the Smoky Mountains, and you've got Tulsa/Oklahoma City to the West, Branson and Kansas City to the North, and Shreveport to the South.

You pass the test.
I too am a little trashy, but hide it well out in public.
In all seriousness, NWA is about as good of an area to raise a family as you'll find. My family moved here when I was 15 (from Greenville, MS). Been here for 30 years now. I was born in Greenville, MS, but escaped as soon as I could. Practically all of my family is from SE Arkansas though.
You are probably already aware of this...but this area is clean, little crime to speak of, and all of the public schools are great.
I wouldn't live in Fayetteville though. I'd rather live in any of the other three big cities as compared to Fayetteville. You can also live in any of the other smaller towns surrounding the big four cities (Fayetteville, Springdale, Rogers, Bentonville) and have great schools. Only school district up here that sucks is Decatur.

I think it's only 10 (including Davidson). The only real outliers, imo, are Dickson and Maury county.

Yeah and we have a bunch of LSU fans in Arkansas so you would only get friendly banter here. My real point was that we’re not very national in our sports interests. Being able to talk shop about the Razorbacks might get you a couple extra social invites. NWA is actually a lot more of a melting pot than central Arkansas though. Outside of NWA the state is very homogeneous. You could move to Arkansas from Brooklyn and start referring to the hogs as “we” your second week in the state and everyone would know who you’re talking about and nobody would even think it was weird.

Love NWA but that is a drawback. Greenville is 100 miles from Charlotte-Douglas and 150 miles from Hartsfield.
We will get there someday.
But seriously though XNA regional has doubled in size and is continuing to expand. More and more direct flights are becoming available at least.

JMO but Greenville offers you everything that NWA can + a bunch of extra perks like better mountains/outdoors, a relatively short drive to the beach, twice the population & things to do while still being a mid sized city, and proximity to a bunch of other great southern cities.

The real drawback is that the airport is in the fricking sticks. I have no idea how they picked that location. Arkansas isn’t that crowded. They could have picked one of the many farms you drive by on the way to the airport I would think. The way NWA is growing I’m guessing there will be a major expansion before too long anyways.
If I recall correctly, the land was donated, so that's why it ended up there.
If you think it's isolated now, you should have seen when it was built. There has actually been a lot of development towards it.
