How contrarian should I be in this one?

Do I need to go home, open up some beers, and get on my computer instead of my phone?

These mofos are some bullshite.

Many of these guys just have their family or friends drive them where they need to be and I guess they pay for their gas or offer hand jobs or something.

It's all so damn stupid.

This OP is hilarious.

River Pilots are the modern day Louisiana mafia

“Oh no I have to go to school for 4 years then get 2-4 more years of experience before I can make $650k!”

This OP is insufferable

100% this.

What the OP said is true, but it is pretty much this. My best friend is about to be an official pilot, and he says this is pretty much always the case. You do have to have family. His dad was one for years so this made it easy for him.

Have you ever driven a ship in the river?

No, but I've run south pass enough times to know that not hitting a sand bar isn't rocket surgery.

You can't defend this dude. Its a blatant mafia. Keep a low profile and enjoy it. There are thousands of baws in South LA who could get a 600 footer from southwest pass to BR.

"$40,000 transportation fee / tipping drivers". Let's have an honest answer from the pilot lobbyists: how many of these drivers are either wives of the pilots or are family members? Another honest answer: working 1 on, 1 off, how many hours do these pilots actually work, as in being active in a ship's journey on the river? As to question #1, I hear a LOT of wives are drivers for their husbands. #2, very very few hrs. That Mr.Integrity himself, Billy Nunguesser, backs this pay raise speaks volumes as to the amount of corruption involved in this rip off.

Why would anybody bother going to one of those 7 maritime schools for 4 years knowing they won’t ever get hired because they aren’t related to a current pilot?

Because that graduate can still make a great living in the maritime industry. Most graduates are employed within 90 days of graduation day, making anywhere between $75m to $130m.

Who would waste their lives just to make between $75million-$130million with such a dangerous process of driving a boat.

Long haul, wide-body aircraft 747s, 777s or A380s, the senior 20+ year commercial PIC aviators make perhaps $400k a year flying across the Pacific, or say London to Singapore. And while I'd never denigrate the skill required of river pilots, comparing those skills to long haul large aircraft pilots well, there's no comparison.

One difference though is river pilots are a family selected group, while senior airline pilots are compensated based on education, training, testing, track record, merit and many years of experience working their way up.

Just one "transportation industry" example.

Trying to justify a massive pay raise for already over compensated skills in the middle of an economic crisis is beyond comprehension.

Or maybe not, river pilots have been getting away with it for years with a don't give a frick attitude.

Hopefully this time they've over played their hand.

I knew one in high school that was really not intelligent and I’m 90% sure he has diagnosed learning disabilities/aspergers. He was a nice guy but I wouldn’t hire him to to run a snowball stand. He was able to make it through this supposed rigorous schedule for the sole reason that he was born into it. I don’t think many people would have an issue with river pilots if the jobs went to the most qualified candidates, however they don’t.

I'm a CPA and I can tell you that statement is 100% bull shite . That, or said individuals need to hire a CPA because they are doing a piss poor job of tax planning.

River Pirates pay very little in taxes because somehow every dollar they spend is a business expense. Car note... business expense. Every gallon of gas they buy... business expense. Fishing tackle... business expense. Every mile they drive... claim it.. Cable at their house... business expense. Cable at several gifriends houses business expense.
