PA uses 'weighted lottery' to distribute lifesaving remdesivir in favor of low-income

The antiviral drug remdisivir has been effective in treating COVID-19, reducing risk of death for severely ill patients by 62 percent. It is also scarce, leaving a number of states in fear of running out as coronavirus cases continue to rise across the country.
As a solution to this problem, Pennsylvania is encouraging healthcare providers to use a “weighted lottery” system to decide which patients are treated with this lifesaving drug and who goes without. Instead of medical need being the deciding factor of who receives a drug, this lottery is weighted in favor of those who sit lower on the socioeconomic spectrum.
Betsy McCaughey, former lieutenant governor of New York and chairman of the Committee to Reduce Infection Deaths, is concerned that this move is not being given proper attention and could have huge implications for the health care system moving forward.
quote:
“They've decided to do some social engineering and tilt the scales and make sure that the drug goes to people who live in low-income areas in preference to patients, maybe in the same ICU with the same medical problems, who live in a nicer neighborhood,” McCaughey told Fox News.
McCaughey says this sort of “redistributive medicine” could have serious ramifications if adopted by more states and in more areas of health care. Hospitals face drug shortages all the time, like the widely used vincristine for childhood cancer. McCaughey worries that if this sort of tipping of the scales becomes normal practice it is the middle class who will suffer.
quote:
“I don't think we should be rationing scarce medical resources against the middle class. We've got to treat everybody the same. They're starting with remdesivir but this is only the beginning,” she said.

The high uses the low against the middle once again. Competitors can be eliminated, and your labor force is saved. What's not to like?

I miss the good ol days where things like this favored those who actually were net positives to society

So Patient A has insurance and does not get the drug over
Patient B who is uninsured? If Patient A is middle class can they live?
How much is this drug with and w/o insurance?
This is getting insane. I had a an antibiotic for my pet and Good Rx brought it from $461 to $41.
Can you use Good Rx if you have insurance?

How else would they decide? Give it to people that would benefit the gene pool?

My conspiratorial brain is now telling me that you probably don't want anything to do with the remdesavir. You see, I think this is a man-made virus that is tailor made to target people in poverty and the elderly.
So since it is tailor made to kill people with, say, diabetes (read lower class, don't eat healthy), I wouldn't touch the damn drug they're also trying to shove down the throat of the people that the virus is designed to kill.
I'll stick with what POTUS suggests, thanks. HCQ for me.![](https://images.tigerdroppings.com/Images/Icons/Iconcheers.gif)

It baffles me how liberals see high income people vs low income. They think all high income earners are evil cheaters and all low income earners are good honest people who have been victimized.

If they ask, tell them you vote Democrat on your advanced directive on hospital admission. You’ll be safe.

There is a much easier solution that will achieve the same result. Just have white-guilt progs donate their treatment to the poor. Fixes two problems at once.

Jesus this shite is maddening. Yeah let’s actively choose to save the low income, obese, smoker, collecting government benefits over middle class working folks.
Its statistically proven lower income individuals are in poorer health and drive up medical costs more. If ANYTHINgG, they should ration it based on who has the best chance to walk out of the hospital alive and with minimal complications
