Yeah Ole Miss guy plead guilty and will never see freedom. Mandatory life with no parole.
I'm guessing he wanted to avoid death penalty and the state wanted to save time and resources a prosecution would demand.

thanks for the update. I been wondering what happened to ole garrett. I could not imagine all the stress this past 4 years wondering what his fate will be. I wouldn't think a jury in New Orleans will show him any mercy. Fascinating case though

Is a 2nd degree murder conviction life with no parole in Louisiana?

Yeah, I believe it is. Maybe he'll take a deal if he's even offered one but he's going to prison I'm sure.

It doesn't look good for the kid -I think their best bet is getting it down to manslaughter.
Homeless black man killed by drunken white kid, with multiple witnesses?
Not good for Garrett.

Do you know why this dragged on for 4 years to just start the trial?
Posted on 5/2/22 at 11:20 am to bdavids09
COVID + NOLA would be my guess.

If manslaughter is offered as plea, Ward will do 40 years without the benefit of parole.
The only available sentence for a second degree murder conviction in Louisiana is life without parole.
Imagine Ward having to face an Orleans Parish jury on a second degree murder charge, where you have a Perlis shirt wearing white guy who is accused of beating to death a homeless black man?

Covid had jury trials closed for over a year plus it’s the New Orleans court system

What about the case against Mike Wade in BR. He brutally killed three people in cold blood. In a case that the police called a crime of rage, he still hasn’t went to any kind
Of trial or anything. The only thing I have seen is that I’m sure they are seeking the death penalty and there was some kind of hearing about that. He should have been put down already.

Imagine being a preppy young white guy looking at hard time in Angola for killing a black guy.
I actually know a guy doing like 30 years in Angola.

The creep from Baton Rouge who shot a bunch of black dudes killed himself within a week of getting to Angola. That’s really the only play here.

Guy I know is still alive. He's been there for a number of years already too. He's a white guy, probably about 40 now. I grew up with his older sister.

Do they segregate based upon perceived threat? The sharks on one tier, the minnows on another, so to speak.

I don't know a whole lot about life in Angola but I'm sure there are tiers of inmates in some sort of fashion.

I’d imagine they’d have to put Ward in protective custody. Word would spread very quickly at whatever Louisiana corrections institute he’d be assigned to that Ward was responsible for killing a black man.
Ward’s definitely going to be doing time for this and will more than likely spend the better part of his life in prison. The Prosecution may not even offer a plea, where Ward would face an Orleans Parish jury on a second degree murder charge. We don’t know, however; it is more than likely he will get some kind of plea. I can’t imagine what’s going through this dudes mind with this kind of charge hanging over his head while out on bail, knowing you’re completely fricked in one way or another.

The defense is saying - Jackson attempted to rob Ward with a knife while he was passed out? Wouldn’t there be video outside the hotel?

WDSU from jan 25 2018
interesting
