re: Why are conservatives so prone to believing conspiracy theories?

It's just become that "conspiracy theories" are just "unpopular thought".
As you mention, previously a conspiracy theory was UFOs, etc.
Now it's just that a certain politician may be corrupt is considered a conspiracy theory.
In a way, it's odd that CT's have been delegitimized because anyone with any basic knowledge of history and politics knows that conspiracies are real and historically grounded, but for awhile they've been pushed aside by non-intentional explanations from the social sciences. As they work their way back in, there's obviously a disagreement about epistemic warrant for CT's. Of course, non-conspiratorial explanations still account for much of what we can understand to be going on in the world, but you wouldn't know it from reading this board.

The left has their own conspiracies.
True, but I can't think of many as ridiculous as many on the right.

This is what I'm talking about. This has nothing to do with me being a pussy. I'm just giving you my opinion on how your blockbuster thread is going. I couldn't care less how you speak to me or anyone else. I'm just letting you know that you come across as an irrational dickhead and generally speaking that's not an effective way of persuading people to your side of the fence.
And yes, I do believe Wayfair has been trafficking children.

The news on Santa hurt. Aside from that calling out lies isn't conservative.it is a life skill.

Exactly. In general, I think it should be obvious that the grander the claim, the higher the bar for belief, but epistemic hygeine will vary.

Also it's a discrediting strategy to call something a conspiracy theory.

I would also note that Hilary Clinton got caught covering up a pedophile ring within the state department while serving as Secretary of State.
So my claim about pedophile rings isn't a conspiracy theory, it's yet another conspiracy fact.
This thread is a total failure.

Hang around some lefty sites and you'll see.

Right. It's a slur in common parlance, akin to saying "it's an old wive's tale" or a superstitious belief.
I'm more in favor of a broader and less pejorative definition of CT's to simply be something like an explanation that attributes salient cause to a conspiracy (where a conspiracy is 2 or more people acting in secret to achieve a goal). A suspicion that your friends are about to throw you a surprise party counts as a CT by this definition, but it throws a lot of the value judgements out and I think that's helpful for taking the theories seriously instead of dismissively.

I don't deny that. I just don't see anything as ridiculous as Sandy Hook was a false flag type stuff from the left.

You will see it conspiracy ideas on the left, but the left attributes much more agency to impersonal forces like class, laws of history, and of course as the British say, "cockups", which get less play around here.

It gets complex because there are a fair number of sophisticated operators here who you can better think of their conspiratorial discourse as propaganda than as conviction.

Or just kidding around but you’d need a sense of humor to see that.

Touche. But you won't blame me for attributing secret motives to others, will you?
