at the idea that the ones searching for answers while all others lap up what they're told are propagandists.

The ignorance in this post is stunning.

Nope. I just don't think she has a dick. I guess that makes me not a conservative.

I was trying to get at the idea that it's hard to tell who's earnest and who's propagandizing. Poe's law, etc.

You mean like the one where the CIA established liquor stores in black neighborhoods?

That's a good one. Like with Qanon and some others, there's often a sense behind the nonsense. When you live under conditions where one group overtly (and secretly) acts against your group's interests, your recourse can be to speculate about conspiracies that end up not being true.

Also, when there's fair warrant to believe there was CIA involvement in cocaine trade in LA, is it super-crazy to wonder about liquor stores?

I...I don't know how to reply to that.

It's like asking "why is the sun so cold?" Or "why does the earth's moon revolve around Jupiter? "

I know a lot of liberals who believe conspiracy theories as well. For example GWB blew up the WTC and the levees in NOLA

This is where I depart from those who think Trumpism is some postmodern ideology of no longer believing in objective truth.

I think Trump people do believe in facts, reason, truth, they're just highly skeptical. Partly for political convenience/viability, partly in reality.

There's no doubt that the modern political environment has driven some on the right to absurdity. Others are appropriately questioning institutions that are corrupted, and more are somewhere in between.

I think the anti-expertise movement on the right is good and bad. Good because it's needed, soft science academia (and hard science to a lesser extent) is probably somewhat corrupted and skewed by politics. Experts put ideology over truth too often, so it makes sense to push back. We're all hyperpoliticized, so I don't think saying "subject matter experts are less trustworthy now" is that controversial, even if it's overbroad.

But I do think it's problematic that we're overstating that reality to the extent that we are effectively doing some of the same things the radical left is doing - dismantling institutions. But I think if you get most on record, they don't want to completely undermine or tear down government or universities, etc. and replace them with something novel. They want to tear them down and rebuild them as they were originally constructed - when they were effective and beneficial to society.

Good post. I see it similarly. It's more a power-based struggle over control of knowledge creating institutions rather than primary differences in beliefs over the existence of/unity of truth. I think the early postmodernists (esp. Lyotard) are helpful for understanding our contemporary disorientation of our information environment, but you don't need to buy into the wooly later stuff to get something out of that.

ETA: anchored?

Yup. A hazard around here. The mods have limited tolerance for certain narratives.
