Master Bedroom Closet Build - Complete

Our house was built in the 1930's and is severly lacking in closet space. The previous owners installed one of the cheap, wire shelving systems and my wife really wanted a custom closet. We checked out california closets, IKEA and a few other systems and there was no way in hell I was going to pay $3k+ for a bunch of MDF shelves. Thus, I made my own.
Started by building a base frame with 2x4's and plywood on top.
Repurposed part of an old entertainment system to serve as the middle shelves
Shelving all attached with pocketholes
First coat of paint. In hindsight, I should've used a paint gun, but we had a bunch of leftover white paint from painting other rooms.
Almost finished project. I ended up doing 2 coats of paint and caulked all of the edges and gaps. This weekend I am going to install the edge banding and finish painting. At some point I will finish the floor trim.
I already had 2 sheets of 3/4 plywood and 2 cans of paint but the total cost ended up being around $400

I keep telling my wife I want to do this to our closet but she won't jump on board. The very next weekend girls trip she takes she's gonna come back to a renovated closet and she will like it.

Nice. How deep are your shelves on the left? Did you account for total width of a hanger for the pole partially behind the shelf?
I opted not to put any doors on my shelving, wish I would have. Shelves are great for accumulating crap.

Yes. We measured everything to get full clearance for hangers and clothing to make it flush with the edge. I believe they are 21" deep.

The shelving on the right is for a lot of her art stuff, which all goes in IKEA containers
Also - this is 100% my wifes closet. I hang my clothes in the entryway closet by the front door.

Nice work
You have a Kreg jib for the pocketholes? I have the K4 but wish I got the K5

I have the small, cheap one. At some point I am going to upgrade to the K5.

Looks great....I contemplated doing fancy built ins, but I was persuaded to stick with wire shelving for air circulation purposes. I don’t keep my house icebox cold, and i didn’t want to deal with any mold or musty smells from enclosed storage. Not all wire shelves are equal, and there are a whole bunch of nifty add ons, specialty hangers, etc for wire systems.

Arrangement looks good. It's amazing how much storage space you can create with just a little bit of planning.
I think you should've used better plywood though. That construction-grade stuff is not really mean for furniture. But it will serve it's purpose.

Nice work. I've built a lot of closets similar to this. I use the pocket hole jig to attach my front trim boards so I don't have to use a nailer. I also use the pre-sanded plywood and pine select because I hate sanding

I was on a tight budget. This thing is built like a brick shithouse though - you can stand on the shelves.

Or as I like to say when I’m done building anything:
*you have to slowly pat the ‘project’ for maximum effectiveness*

Pretty nice.
Cabinet grade plywood would have made a big difference and required a lot less effort to end up as nice as you did.
Solid wood edging is always a nice touch. Hangs in better for the long run and once finished (puttied and sanded) gives you a seamless look. Plus something like a 3/4" by 1" (on edge) helps stiffen up plywood shelving.
Ya done good!
opps: just saw plywood comment two post up (not to nag)

Where's the hidden space for guns and other valuables?

One of these things is not like the other..
Just kidding. Looking good so far. It'll look nice with some clean trim on the fronts.
I've considered putting built-ins in our painfully narrow closet, but I don't think we'd be physically able to walk into it with more than about a 6" deep shelf on the empty wall.

I lost all my guns in a boating accident.

this was my last weekend project when the MRS was gone.Posted on 7/15/20 at 10:40 am to Azazello
Looking to do something like this for the wife also. Your 2x4 base not tied into the floor? Did you just secure via pocket holes with the wall backer?
