From The National Center for Biotechnology Information

quote:

Results

The rates of all infection outcomes were highest in the cloth mask arm, with the rate of ILI statistically significantly higher in the cloth mask arm (relative risk (RR)=13.00, 95% CI 1.69 to 100.07) compared with the medical mask arm. Cloth masks also had significantly higher rates of ILI compared with the control arm. An analysis by mask use showed ILI (RR=6.64, 95% CI 1.45 to 28.65) and laboratory-confirmed virus (RR=1.72, 95% CI 1.01 to 2.94) were significantly higher in the cloth masks group compared with the medical masks group. Penetration of cloth masks by particles was almost 97% and medical masks 44%.

quote:

Conclusions

This study is the first RCT of cloth masks, and the results caution against the use of cloth masks. This is an important finding to inform occupational health and safety. Moisture retention, reuse of cloth masks and poor filtration may result in increased risk of infection. Further research is needed to inform the widespread use of cloth masks globally. However, as a precautionary measure, cloth masks should not be recommended for HCWs, particularly in high-risk situations, and guidelines need to be updated.

Anything that is reused will increase chances of infection. This isn’t some super secret discovery.

Every time you take off any mask and then put it back on yu risk contamination it. The problem is people are reusing medical masks, which is a problem.

Reminds me of HIV/condom talk of the 80s and 90s. People arguing how it can keep a pregnancy from happening, but not designed to keep out virus etc.

My favorite is walking out of a big box store and taking my mask off and putting it in my pocket before I fully get outside. I can feel the looks

If you're using a cloth mask, get/make one that has a pocket for a filter. You can make your own filters from the really good home A/C/furnace filters. Also, wash the mask and change the filter regularly.

ETA: Not sure why I'm getting downvoted for this. I am just saying that this is one way to make a cloth mask a bit better/more effective. There are some situations where people have to wear one, so they might as well make it as effective as they can.

Are you telling me that my old, cut-up t-shirts are not an effective biological safety device?

Well, I'll be damned.

I’m aware. They would have to provide masks if they mandated specific types. You know this.

And I’m sure there is some study out there that could refute this study.

I wear a neck gaiter that I can pull up and down when needed. I don’t really care if it’s effective, just as long as it keeps businesses happy.

More than that. The study claims they could be increasing risk/spread. Meaning it’s better to not wear one at all.

Gaitor isn’t allowed in Disney World.

That said, this is about protecting one from those who have it. Hence the mandate. If they're wearing one, they're less likely to launch germs in such a way that one who is clean can be contaged.

Yep mask wearers against science

Its their inferior genetics that make them both more prone to getting it and more prone to ignoring the science saying they could be more at risk of getting it

A limitation of this study is that we did not measure compliance with hand hygiene, and the results reflect self-reported compliance, which may be subject to recall or other types of bias. Another limitation of this study is the lack of a no-mask control group and the high use of masks in the controls, which makes interpretation of the results more difficult. In addition, the quality of paper and cloth masks varies widely around the world, so the results may not be generalisable to all settings.
so they found that cloth masks are worse for healthcare workers than medical masks (duh), but didn’t have a no mask control to see how they performed versus not wearing a mask at all

But the OT tells me that in a video where some Karen with a bandana over her mouth is recording a guy without a mask, he's the idiot and a-hole making everyone sick.
