it makes no sense that china would risk a confrontation. they have tons of investments and financial interests in the us. iow, if you're the drug dealer, you don't want your customers dying. bad for business. more likely the cold war will continue

It’s possible. China’s making a lot more noise lately (relatively) for some reason. They normally like to move an inch at a time, wait for the backlash to subside, then move again. Between COVID, Hong Kong, and the Galway Valley, this is loud for them.

But they are behind the ones who are. And China did drop that Virus in our lap; election year, for a POTUS who was virtually destroying their economy. And running against a Candidate (Biden) who is in their back pocket.
China is like Japan in WWII...up against the wall with no hope other than to take Trump out. It's that...or tank.

It depends what he means by “violent confrontation”. I read that and hear actual fighting with human casualties. But the words violent and confrontation have both been so watered down recently that I’m not sure that’s what he means.
For example, I could certainly see China continuing to step up their cyber warfare and making a hacking attempt on the electronics of one of our naval cruisers in the pacific. Maybe that could even lead to the ship breaking down and stranding our soldiers at sea. But I just can’t see what either side has to gain by actual physical combat.
