Master Sgt. Andrew 'Andy' Christian Marckesano served 6 full tours in Afghanistan with the 82nd Airborne and the Ranger regiment

quote:

The enemy could never break him, but what this decorated Green Beret eventually found was that his enemy was within. Friends who served with him in the military say he was the real “Captain America.”

Master Sgt. Andrew Christian Marckesano served six full tours in Afghanistan with the 82nd Airborne and the Ranger regiment and a half dozen more combat tours overseas. He rose to become a decorated Green Beret and a Silver Star recipient. He had just moved to Washington, D.C., to start a coveted job at the Pentagon. Two days after the Fourth of July on Monday night, after having dinner with his former battalion leader, Marckesano returned home from dinner in Old Town, Alexandria, and died by suicide in front of his wife. He had three small children and was still on active duty.

quote:

His death sent shock waves through the military. His friends, family and military leaders were at a loss. Many told Fox News that Marckesano never got over his tour in Afghanistan's Arghandab Valley in 2009 with the 2-508, a battalion that had one of the highest casualty rates of any unit during the war. “That deployment was like being in the ring with Mike Tyson for a year,” according to the battalion’s former Command Sgt Major Bert Puckett.

He sent a passionate appeal this week to the rest of the battalion: “Text me, I told you before my door is open... my phone is at hand. We did things that people make movies about and in some cases, writers and producers wouldn’t even try to write our story... the rucksack is heavy... and when it gets heavy we [&$#*] help each other, but you have to reach out... Don’t let the Valley win.”

Marckesano’s suicide was the 30th from this battalion. He is one of the 20 combat veterans taking their lives each day -- an epidemic the military and White House are trying to stop. Last month, President Trump launched the PREVENTS Task Force with a White House ceremony.

quote:

“My administration is marshaling every resource to stop the crisis of veteran suicide and protect our nation's most treasured heroes. They've been through so much, and it's such a deep-seated problem,” Trump said.

quote:

Young combat veterans die by suicide at four times the rate of other veterans.

There is simply NO EXCUSE for ever letting things get to this point with our veterans, and if there is one thing this country should without question fund to the max it’s our VA hospitals and treatment for those this country sends to war. They are without question the very best this country has to offer in courage and sacrifice, and yet the treatment they get in return is just plain revolting.

This shite makes me SICK SICK SICK to my stomach.

WTF does this say about us? Seriously....

That our politicians do not care about us. All politicians are on the same page to keep the status quo...

But they will thank the hell out of them for their service right.

That is absolutely heartbreaking. May he Rest In Peace, and God bless his family. I can’t even imagine the pain.

Veteran suicide is always going to be an issue as long as we are fighting vague wars for vague causes to help people that couldn't give a shite about us.

The trauma of killing someone is only mitigated by the necessity of protecting loved ones in the act, IMO.

It seems I read that Russia had this type of problem after their troops came back from Afghanistan.

For them I heard it was drug related.

My heart is out for our guys.

Suicide rate among veterans is actually higher than covid mortality rate among veterans. We are willing to destroy our entire economy over covid, but do very little for our veterans. Sad.

I've lost too many friend from suicide. 2 to be exact. 2 too many. The culture we created to be MEN created the same culture to hide our feelings.

Valhalla. Vets on here if you are even thinking about it when the dark dogs run, call a buddy, call the line, fricking CALL someone. Don’t do it. It may be dark at the minute but light can come. Please, please, please you are worth more than that and better that those thought.

This is fresh off of me watching “Home of the Brave” the other night about veterans struggling with civilian life after combat. It’s a really difficult thing we ask of our military to do, and I just imagine the least we can do for them is provide easily accessed and consistent help for them when they return and adjust back to civilian life.

Us ?
What the hell am I supposed to do?
Run for office get elected then defund the military so this shite doesn’t happen?
You need help!

Is this a horrible situation absolutely. I have friends trying to see therapist now hell no cant find one.
Maybe pay VA docs a little better and double the staff in mental health that’s something I don’t have a problem with.
Limiting how many tours one should do? That’s an idea.
We have plenty of problems.
How about not paying every hostess from Applebee’s 800-900 a week unemployment and using that money to get these folks the help they need.

I've given up trying to convince people that The Forever War is going to "break the sword." Sending our Army and USMC folks to the war zone for the majority of their 20 year career is going to eventually break the sword. It's breaking individuals. It has the potential to break our military system.

Nobody wants to hear it. Vets don't. Wash DC politicians don't want to hear it. The highest-ranking military officers don't want to hear it. So, I don't discuss it anymore. Nobody wants to hear it. Everybody wants to ignore the truth. If Biden wins, we'll be fighting The Forever War. If Trump wins, he will TRY to stop The Forever War, but, all of Wash DC and the Pentagon will resist him.
