Dove Field Update

Got late permission to do a dove field up here in NC. Planted a 6 acre field first weekend in June with Browntop and Jap millet mixed with 12-15 foot rows of milo throughout for cover and to work the labs in upland later on.
Here is a few pics from yesterday. I went up to spread 34-0-0 at about 125 lbs. acre. Looking to head out within next month and get ready to burn it down and bush hog in mid August.

This is my sunflowers at the house. About 5 acres total. Had some good growing conditions this year and the pre-emerge I put out did a helluva job of keeping the grass/weeds out. Probably my cleanest patch in 12 years of attempting this. Took these a few days ago when the first started heading out. They have filled out a good bit since. I’ll take a few more in a day or 2.

stupid question, where do you buy seed from? I'm assuming it's not online.

Lots of pew pews coming if a front doesn't get the doves, or a tropical storm or da corona or...

Local feed and seed and carries the Peredovik seed which is what most people plant. That’s what I planted. They’re ~$45 bag. But can plant regular bird feed black oil sunflower seed like you get at Tractor Supply too. Honestly I can’t tell much of a difference. They are about 20/bag.

Thanks, I have about 4 acres behind my house I'd like to plant one day to see how it works.

How many pounds per acre? I would love to try it next year at the camp.

If you’re planting with a planter or drill in an area without a lot of deer something around 5lbs/ acre is fine. I plant more than double that because I have a very bad deer problem. The years I’ve planted with a drill they just walk down the row and annihilate every plant in 2-3 nights. My best bet is to broadcast about 15lbs/ acre and figure for 30%- 40% loss due to deer. This year the deer were not as bad.

Was going to do Black Oils but planted too late and didn't want to hastle with pre emergent. Thats a good looking field my biologists buddies all tell me just to get black oil and use the right pre emergent and they will be hard to beat. What pre emergent did you use?

You ought to smack em on that millet and milo.
The pre-emerge I used this year was called Broadaxe. I caught rain just right after putting it out and it has really held the other stuff back. Another brand name I’ve used before is Authority Elite, which is the same shite I believe. It works well too
You can spray Select over the top if you start getting grass.

Yeah, they’re the same... I used it also. We plant ours in super heavy buckshot (old catfish ponds) and it worked awesome where I got a good rain on some of it, then half a mile down the road I got just enough rain to help get the sunflowers up, but not enough to seal the cracks so the chemical didn’t incorporate worth a shite. Came back with Select, Blazer, and Zidua under a dolphin nose hooded sprayer to clean up the middles and am just going to let what’s growing within the little 3 or 4 inch planted area go.
The plane also killed about 20% of ours with Roundup drift. So I have like 5 acres of coffee weeds with an occasional sunflower that survived, 10 acres of good looking sunflowers and some coffee weeds (but at least the middles are clean), and 10 acres of the most beautiful sunflowers around.

Great idea. At least it is until you’re standing in front of a federal magistrate coughing up hunting privileges and thousands of dollars.
We’ve got about 40 acres of sunflowers spread across 5 patches. We do Clearfield which are a lot more expensive but are easier to fool with.

Not if done correctly. We hunt a dairy farm, and done this the last 15 or so yrs. Stop chopped corn 2 weeks before. Keep broadcasting wheat, roll it under a couple days before. Its (normal farming).. zero issues. Have had game wardens pop in 2 of last 3 yrs opening morning. Never said a word, not a problem at all. Its on a farm, so farmer is growing wheat lol. We kill 700-1000 birds every time on this field. Outside of people over limit. Never an issue with fields

My buddies who also hunt in Ray-vegas planted round up ready seeds and their crop looks pretty good as well. Is that the same as this? They said they spent more than they have in the past.

Negative, what they are planting is “Clear Field” sunflowers . They are indeed like roundup ready sunflowers. Badass but high dollar
