Depending on location and if you can limit the pressure it should be great late in the season...migrating dove are a BLAST...big, fast flying mature birds that will make their September cousins look like Muscovy Ducks flying. If you can leave some of the plantings untouched until later in the season all the more better. I wish I had a place like that.

My buddies who also hunt in Ray-vegas planted round up ready seeds and their crop looks pretty good as well. Is that the same as this? They said they spent more than they have in the past.

No, there is no Roundup Ready sunflower variety. They are either conventional or have Clearfield technology.

We’ve been paying about $175/bag for some Clearfield sunflowers from Mycogen, but Mycogen is now defunct so I’m not sure what I’m going to do yet for next year. I don’t even know what non Clearfields cost.

While Clearfield does give you a couple of options “over the top,” it’s still no picnic if you don’t get a pre emerge herbicide out behind the planter. Those over the top options aren’t worth a shite on any weed over 3 or 4 inches, but if you have a pre emerge out, and then get some Select, Beyond, and Zidua out within a month after the sunflowers emerge, you can maintain a really nice, clean sunflower field... But you’re talking about probably $75/acre in seed and herbicide at this point.

That’s what I have not been able to understand about Clearfield varieties. It’s all my farmer buddies plant but at $200/bag and still having to spray pre-emerge like I do and then Select over the top if it gets grassy it doesn’t make sense for me. But if I had a charge account at Helena or whenever I’d plant the good ones too

Planted this browntop on June 6th. Got a rain on it on June 9th. This is a picture from June 23rd. (Above)

This is it beginning to head out on July 4th. That's 25 days after it got rained on. Pretty amazing.

I also planted some on July 4th. So I should have some getting ready about July 25th. And another wave getting ready about August 20th.

30 days before the season we cut about 25%, and burn it. Then, about 10 days before the season we disk this part and top sew wheat.

10 days before the season we cut and burn 50% and leave it.

2 days before the season we cut the remaining 25% and bale it for hay. And use those bales as shooting stations.

I guess I get to show the almost final pics that I have from 2 weeks ago. I'm pretty sure when I bush hog this field the game warden is going to think I have baited it. Tons of forage couldn't be happier. I will be cutting 60% of it this weekend and disc it under. On top of that I will be installing a rather long fake power line from tree to tree with 3/16 cable. Any advice on the cable?

I plan to leave the Milo standing it hasnt fully matured yet. The millet is ready though this was a couple weeks ago. I planted rows of Milo to be left standing for cover and future upland hunting. I have 2 pointing labs that I will work in this field later on in fall and winter. I leave the Milo up to place quail and pheasant in for my dogs to work.

What part of the state is the field in? Myself and another baw might be interested if you got any spots open and I t’s not too far from CLT. Obviously we would pay to hunt. If totally private..no problem, just thought I’d ask. Looks sweet.

I’ve got a place to hunt, but my buddy doesn’t.

I'm north of Winston-Salem. Its private but no problem for others. I don't have any spots left but would be open to a later shoot in the season if you are up for that.

the pre-emerge I put out did a helluva job of keeping the grass/weeds out

Thanks for sharing. LSUBalls. Could you list out your time line of what you did and the products you used. for example

1. Field before sunflowers was what? what did you use to kill it, and what month.
2. What month did you plant sunflowers. How much fertilizer etc etc?
3. How long after planting did you wait to come back and use fertilizer or spray for weeds.

Thank you I have my eye on a field and want to plant but have so many conflicting experts telling me what to do.

What brand of Sunflowers you use and were they round up ready.

Appreciate your answers beautiful sunflowers

Finished cutting the millet down yesterday plan to install my fake power line tomorrow with decoys. I will till a 20 yard section down the middle of the millet for the dove to land in as well.

My sunflowers got leveled flat yesterday by the wind. Looks like somebody took a roller to them. It's not necessarily bad I don't think. At least for the first split. I think the only thing it will really hurt is having available seeds later in the season.

Sorry, just saw this

quote:

1. Field before sunflowers was what? what did you use to kill it, and what month.

It used to be a pasture. Bermuda and bahia. I've planted it the last 10-12 years in sunflowers. Burn it down with Roundup every spring.

2. What month did you plant sunflowers. How much fertilizer etc etc?

I planted in early May. You can go to the end of May with conventional sunflowers and be fine for having them ready for opening day. I fertilized with 200 lbs/acre of 13-13-13. Some years I get my farmer buddies to drop in a fertilize it. This year I just spread it when I planted.

3. How long after planting did you wait to come back and use fertilizer or spray for weeds.

As mentioned I fertilzed when I planted so I wouldn't have to drive back thru them after they came up. I didn't have to do much spraying for weeds as the pre-emerge I used really held the grass/weeds back well this year. I did spot spray some areas with Select, which will kill grass but not the sunflowers. The pre-emerge is used was called Broadaxe.

Thank you I have my eye on a field and want to plant but have so many conflicting experts telling me what to do.

What brand of Sunflowers you use and were they round up ready.

I planted Peredovik black oil seeds. They are not "clearfield" sunflowers, which are the ones that are similar to Roundup ready. THey ones I planted are about $50/bag. The clearfields are closter to $300
