Californians are still free to attend their house of worship. But they’re not supposed to sing or chant.

Citing the risk of spreading the coronavirus, updated COVID-19 guidelines issued Wednesday by the state Department of Public Health say “places of worship must therefore discontinue singing and chanting activities.”

In previously allowing religious organizations to reopen in late May, the state merely said these institutions should “strongly consider discontinuing singing, group recitation, and other practices and performances.”

Health agencies such as the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention say shouting or singing can spread the coronavirus just as easily as coughing or sneezing.

California’s health department agrees, and as Gov. Gavin Newsom begins tightening protocols during a resurgence of the pandemic, it now says singing and chanting are outright banned.

Can’t tell the difference between California and the Soviet Union at this point.

So does this mean no justice no peace can no longer be chanted in the streets?

Yeah that puts a lot more molecules in the air. It’s a very 2020 problem with banning it being a 2020 solution. I’m not saying if it’s good or bad, just where we are

John Roberts fricked this thing up so bad. If he would have just called a spade a spade (or a strike a strike, in his parlance), and said you have to treat first amendment activities alike - instead of giving Newsom free reign to do whatever - this wouldn’t be happening.

If protesters can organize, congregate, sing, and chant, so church goers should too.

Since Californians set off fireworks in defiance of the governor last night, I hope they defy him again in church this morning and sing unto the Lord. How do you even enforce this preposterous rule?

As Jackson once said, he's made his decision. Now let him enforce it.

I would never step foot in a church who obeyed an order like this.

I hardly ever sing at church. Cant carry a tune. I've always thought there wasn't anything that could make me sing in a loud voice at church.

I was wrong, I'd bring down the rafters.

They do this because they know Christians will complain and then comply.

Clap Your Hands, All You Peoples

(2 Kings 18:13-16; 2 Chronicles 32:1-8; Psalm 46:1-11; Psalm 48:1-14)

1{To the chief Musician, A Psalm for the sons of Korah.} O clap your hands, all ye people; shout unto God with the voice of triumph.

2For the LORD most high is terrible; he is a great King over all the earth.

3He shall subdue the people under us, and the nations under our feet.

4He shall choose our inheritance for us, the excellency of Jacob whom he loved. Selah.

5God is gone up with a shout, the LORD with the sound of a trumpet.

6Sing praises to God, sing praises: sing praises unto our King, sing praises.

7For God is the King of all the earth: sing ye praises with understanding.

8God reigneth over the heathen: God sitteth upon the throne of his holiness.

9The princes of the people are gathered together, even the people of the God of Abraham: for the shields of the earth belong unto God: he is greatly exalted.

Our church isn’t allowing it anyway because of the further spread it can do, but this seems unnecessary by Newsom. Then again he fricking sucks.

A good number of years ago I was in a similar place. My pastor, who's my age, preached a sermon on liturgical worship emphasizing the desirability of everyone's participation.

He says, looking right at me, "There's probably some of you here today who know every lyric of every Beatle song, every-you name the group you like most-and you'll sing them in your cars, music turned up loudly, at the top of your lungs...,but the great hymns of the Faith?....
In church?..., only silence..."

I've sung ever since and have gotten better over time with practice comforting myself with the exhortation, "make a joyful noise unto the LORD."

Your post reminded me of that and why Newsome is a tyrannical screwball.
