Got high tonight and started watching it. What a classic. Gene Wilder is fricking amazing. This movie was made for only 2 million dollars. That’s unbelievable. This movie has to make that amount of money every year. One of the all time great kids/stoner movies. On Netflix if you’re curious.

Also Grandpa Joe is the most worthless piece of shite in cinematic history.

Never saw all the drug innuendos the first few times till I got high and watched it while in college again

Classic movie, and hardly ever gets old...
I watched it recently on Netflix too and it holds up pretty well even today IMO. It's funny you guys are mentioning Grandpa Joe as a villain. Maybe it's because I'm older now but I noticed several things this time about him that I never had before:
- Sits around in bed for 20 straight years and lets Charlie and his mom pick up the slack
- When Charlie shows up with a loaf of bread, he says "what difference does it make where he got it? point is he got it" as if stealing it would've been just fine
- Jumps up out of bed and moves around like a 20-year old as soon as Charlie finds the ticket
- Encourages Charlie to drink the fizzy lifting drink which almost causes him to lose his whole prize (not to mention his life)
- Tells Charlie they'll give Slugworth the Gobstopper to get even with Wonka
I love the actor (Jack Albertson), but Grandpa Joe is an a-hole.

Laid up in bed
Smokes tobacco as family struggles to put food on the table
Cant walk, work, etc but can instantly dance, and sing once Charlie finds a golden ticket
Convinces Charlie to almost kill himself
Tries to convince Charlie to betray Willie Wonka and deprive the family of the greatest reward it could ever hope for
No one gets to claim ownership for thinking Joe is a piece of shite. It is the universal train of thought for anyone who watched the movie

Damn - I was stone cold sober yesterday and started it, but backed out. I'd rather watch that with the kids now.

I've used this one IRL a bunch

Own this movie digitally and this thread forced me to rewatch
Besides obvious gripes with Jackass Joe
Gene Wilder is just such an amazing treat on screen. His performance is soo subtle, nuanced, show stealing, yet heartfelt.
Charlie with no dad, 4 bum grandparents, a loving mom working her life away to make ends meet, and yet when given the chance to steal a secret and sell it to give your family a chance at a quality of life they never had...that gobstopper had to look awfully tempting...to still do the right thing...just a beautiful moment.
Great movie.
