Need recommended insurer/agent in Shreveport area. or maybe not. At my mom's for the week, and just checked her insurance policy. She drives maybe 50 miles a week, if that. Most weeks, nothing. She's paying an annual fee of $1789 on a 2013 Chrysler Town and Country van and has 250/500/100 with 250/500 UM and $500 deducts.

I'm in Texas with the same, but mine costs around $5600 a year, with same coverage, but I have three, newer vehicles worth much more and a teenage driver. To me, at her age, 85 (she's still sharp and has all her mental capabilities) and as little as she drives and the value of the car being so low, at less than $10k, it just seems like a lot. Maybe not, I don't know LA rates anymore.

Recommendations?

I think she can get a low mileage discount.

Switched to Farm Bureau after being with State Farm for 20 years. 5 vehicles and home was over $1100/month with State Farm (supposedly qualified for all their discounts too). Same coverage but I pay $600/month now.

She's currently with Safeco.

$150/month for 250/500 BI and UM limits plus comp/coll doesn't really sound out of line in LA. Should definitely check with her current insurer though to see if they offer a low mileage discount if one isn't already applied

Safeco offers a plug in device that she would automatically get a discount for having and with as little as she drives, could earn up to 20% for it.

Does she have an umbrella policy so she needs the max limits?

Price isn't terrible for those limits.

This is going to be a huge driver of the premium. At that age some carriers quit writing it, some will require a medical check.

I write for Allstate, I don’t mind taking a look at it. Shreveport is usually a pretty cheap area for rates. She also might be over insured, that’s a ton of coverage for an 85 yr old.

I recently switched to Geico when I bought a new vehicle. Their quote was much lower than State Farm and Progressive. It specifically asked average mileage per month. Did it all online.

I contacted the agency. Based on her current driving history, they are sending her an app to keep on her phone that will track her driving for 90 days. Based on that, she gets an immediate 10% reduction, and if she drives as she states, they will reduce her rate by 30%. Also, she has been with them long enough that she has qualified for a $500 reduction in deductible, so she can reduce her rate by going to a $1000 deductible, in which case she still would have to pay $500 OOP, or keep it as-is, pay a little more and have no deductible.

Now we are waiting to see what it cost to reduce from 250/500 to 100/300. At any rate, after 90 days this already reduces her cost to $1192 a year, without changing liability limits.

Most of the cost is for when you get sued for $1,000,000 for a fender bender because there were 8 people in the other car and all have soft tissue damage and can't work anymore.

We are in TX but a few months ago switched using Kirk Gilfour of Goosehead Insurance((985) 859-6979) . He is licensed in LA and TX but lives in Houston suburbs now. He's from Houma area.

We used him for home and auto insurance saving $1,375.56/yr or $114/month. He's a franchisee of Goosehead which I think he has more carriers to shop from and a few other perks.

Kirk was excellent and really took the time to explain everything to us and how it worked and checked in on us throughout the process. You can tell he genuinely cares about his clients. Can’t recommend him enough, excellent communication and really wanted to get us the best possible coverage and savings.

We previously had Travelers and he switched us to Safeco with exact same coverage. Saved $400/yr then had option to pay for full year in advance and saved another $100. We only have 2 cars 2007 and 2015 full coverage on both. Our year insurance is $956.

What was interesting he also has Travelers as an option so he plugged in everything exactly as the plan we had with Travelers at the time and his was $100 cheaper per year. Turns out he doesn't have nearly the fees built as many other agents.

Goosehead doesn't really have any more options than a decent sized independent.
