Pretty silly of those that died to do so defending someone else's right to own slaves.

Or perhaps the war wasn't just about slavery to the South hence why many today still try to hold onto the heritage including statues, flags, etc. Nah...that couldn't be it.

You’re right but you won’t win this argument. People will never look at the context of the war anymore. The history was bastardized long before 2020

6% owning slaves is still too high though. It’s a huge mark on our history for sure. That and the genocide of the native Americans (which isn’t a hot button issue which is strange given how much we are focusing on slavery) are the worst things our country has ever done.

And it’s silly to argue that the civil war wasn’t about slavery, it absolutely was. It was about other things as well but to pretend that wasn’t part of it is naive.

That said it ended 150 years ago. That’s more than enough time to get your act together. I don’t believe reparations are needed or justified, nor is using the excuse of slavery to justify the problems in the black community correct. Or Jim Crow laws for that matter

Native Americans, on a whole, dont blame any present day shortcomings on past events.

I can’t understand why people cannot admit that the war was about white supremacy and the right to own negro slaves.

This is as plain as the blue sky, yet people continue to deny it. Why?

Because it wasn't about this

Because it wasn't white people who controlled and owned the majority of slaves.

Slavery and genocide are literally the worst things every civilization, country or group of people has done.

Certainly a dark history, but America is exactly average in the history of mankind on this one, unfortunately.

It still happens today, so at least we're ahead of the curve in that regard. And we've sacrificed American lives over the years in order to correct not only our own issues, but that of many other nations.

Maybe a war or two in Africa against genocidal and oppressive regimes will show our good faith effort to atone for history.

I am surprised it was that high of a percentage.

I think slavery was the straw that broke the camels back. As you say there were not a lot of people who owned slaves.

I would assume that many who fought did so because the Union army was attaching their towns, friends and neighbors. Probably more tribalism than anything.

Ole Jim Bob didnt give a crap about some slave owners. But they sure as shite cared when their town or neighbors were attacked by the North...

Agreed. Wonder why they aren’t offended by every little thing, pulling statues down, burning down buildings, asking for reperations, blaming their problems and everything on what happened to their ancestors, etc?

White supremacy and the American institution of slavery are inexorably linked.

There is no way in hell those percentages were right. Maybe, it was distorted for some political reason.

The argument on the reason for wars is never ending. Plenty of people who fought for the confederate states didn't own slaves, so of course their justification will be different. People argue over the reason we engaged in basically every war since the revolution. The reason for the powers that be very rarely align with the reason for the average soldier.

Same reason that people blame their problems on slavery. Using history of the past as a tool for the present.
