The war was about slavery

Was it?

Lincoln didnt plan to flee the slaves till after the war started, according to him.

Lincoln was racist. Most northerners were racist. And they fought to free the slaves. I guess that makes sense to a leftist.

A GREAT book on the subject is Black Masters. It is about a black slave owner in South Carolina and explains a good bit about the laws that were developed around that town surrounding slavery along with going into details about other black slave owners - in particular those in Louisiana who owed sugarcane plantations.

My great grandfather in Northwest Georgia and his brothers did not join until 1865 when the Yankees started invading. Before that, they were farming land from which the Cherokees were removed...not a proud fact.

There is no way in hell those percentages were right. Maybe, it was distorted for some political reason.

That's a percentage of households, not people.

Divide the percentages by the average number of people in the household and you get a per capita figure.

Funny thing is we are using the same 1860 Census numbers which some here are attempting to dismiss.

I clearly stated percentage of Households which gives a clearer picture of the beloved CSA " Domestic Institution" . Southerners were willing to go to war for it .

There was no place on the 1860 Census to put slave counts per household.

which isn’t a hot button issue which is strange given how much we are focusing on slavery

Maybe because non whites were also complicit in this before present day countries were formed. And I think possibly because some tribes were brutal and enslaved people themselves.

I am thinking both stout and sugar's % of population numbers came from spurious sources. Truth is somewhere in the middle.

Stop " thinking" & gives us numbers/ facts. The only numbers we have are the US Census & US Slave Schedules.

There were about 4000 free slaves who owned slaves. Some had as little as 1 and some upwards of maybe a hundred. Some fathered children from their slaves and a process to register a slave was used to make certain that offspring stayed in that family. I may be wrong on the totals but its somewhere in that ball park.

Not only is history not taught in school - plenty of children have no appreciation for it because of the way it is presented. One of the many reasons why we homeschool.

One thing I thought about was living in Georgia we learned all about the 13 colonies, slavery, civil war. Wonder if learning that has a negative impact for some kids growing up. They learn black people were slaves and may not have much interaction with in daily life and that builds a different perception of them.

Ummmmm ... a lot of the Confederate generals also served in the US Army. They were not considered traitors by whom they fought with in war. So, why should we consider them traitors now? Becaust it fits the narrative? No thanks.
They were traitors.

Damn, sounds a lot like modern day Democrats trying to keep the black vote on board.
Sure, whatever gets you by. But try to stay on topic.

Chanting falsehoods over and over and over doesn’t make them anymore true. Screaming over someone isn’t a take.
