Thompson is going to be an upgrade defensively.

I liked Mathis but his approach at the plate frustrated me over the course of the last two weeks.

Good luck to him.

this team is going to seriously lack some upperclassman leadership.

It does. Kind of reminds me a bit of 2016.

Looks like Eddie is going to earn his volunteer salary next season

Aside from Beloso it’s about as unproven of a returning order as LSU has had

It’s like pm loses Chris Reid and he went out to find his clone
But Mathis was nowhere close to Reid as a hitter or fielder

Do we expect Thompson to pitch any?

I don’t think you need Thompson to pitch
You have enough pitchers coming in plus drost might pitch
Pm never ends up using two way players
He would rather than focus on one thing
Similar to papierski when he stopped trying to switch hit he started hitting

Pap struggled until Manieri allowed him to go back to switch hitting.

Manieri has a history of allowing his players to attempt playing both ways.

Chad Jones, Austin Bain and even Cabrera pitched some his freshman year. Storz was expected to bat some but with his injuries the staff wanted him to focus on getting healthy.

He’s not unwilling to let players play both ways we just haven’t had many guys capable of it

I don’t necessarily agree with that.

We have Beloso and Garza. Storz May have been hurt most of his career but he’s been with the team awhile. Labas is also an upperclassman now. Fontenot is the undeniable bullpen leader

You’d like to be a little older but I don’t think we’re lacking leaders.

Thompson and Drost can both pitch but there’s a bigger need to find hitters at this point and I wouldn’t expect either to get enough innings as freshmen to split time.

The 2016 lineup was very young and unproven but talented. You returned the Jordan’s, Fraley, Robertson, Paperiski...although not a ton of starting experience...a little like in 2021.

The pitching staff was very experienced much like it will be in 2021.

Edit: I see why you replied the way you did. I meant to say the lineup will be inexperienced with a lack of veterans.

That’s fair. To be honest I didn’t even take a minute to try to remember who was here in 16

Frustrated me, as well. For some reason, criticizing his play was off limits, as every time I eluded to him struggling, people made excuses for him. I'm not saying he never would have come out of that but, from where I sat, it looked like he was trying to hit a home run with every swing, and kept popping up or rolling over. He looked nothing as he was advertised by the coaches. I was quite surprised by that. Anyone can have a slump, but the keyword you used is "approach". There was just no discipline.
