There's a very weird culture of being scared of all kinds of ridiculous scenarios, coupled with a strong desire to play GI Joe as an adult out there these days.

Seriously...why would anyone not in the Military, law enforcement or organized crime need body armor?
I'm surprised you can't think of any scenarios.

There are now a lot of people who used to wonder why people might need AR-15s or high capacity magazines. They wonder no longer.

No doubt your surprise stems from you not knowing me or anything about me. I am, however, not at all surprised that someone on a message board would post something about being surprised based on an assumption.

I can't tell you what the risk profile is for you, or what it is likely to be. Armor is getting better, lighter and (slightly) less expensive all the time. Having said that, it remains heavy, uncomfortable and noticeably restricts one's movement.

For it to be effective, you're going to have to train with it and you're probably going to find you need more cardio.

Good luck and be safe.

Of course a think the army still buys the Kevlar plates.

The woven pieces of the vest are Kevlar. The old trauma plates were ceramic. The new ones are also ceramic, but specifically boron carbide.

The Dragon Skin (Pinnacle) armor was kind of a boondoggle - best I can tell, they sent some nice bribes to Senators HRC and Jim Webb to gin up some positive PR and after they used their seats in the Senate to prod the Pentagon, they revealed the failed test results.

The new interceptor stuff with the lighter, better E-SAPI trauma plates is supposed to be really good, but I was never issued the new plates (at least I don't think). I think I was issued the improved OTV for Iraq, though. If I did have the new plates, may God have helped those boys who had to fight in the old ones.

There was a Chris Matthews story where the guy who founded the interceptor armor said that the dragon skin armor was more superior.

I was certainly familiar and interested in the controversy at the time.

If exposed to high heat for prolonged period, the adhesive holding the numerous plates of the Dragon Skin armor was compromised.

So, no bueno. I'm sure the design was innovative - some of the test results were intriguing.

Pinnacle went away, but I think that the successor company sells armor through

this website.

but it is an entirely new design, from what I understand (some sort of hybrid between IBA style and Dragon Skin).

They don't?

Some of us still think you folks are paranoid and like playing GI Joe... Like I said.

Just looking around at the different sites, it appears that I’m not the only one considering armor.

Lead times 10-12 weeks.

I'm not 100% sure, but I think Spartan is the most popular private supplier of body armor.

I have a banshee shellback carrier with level IIIA plates. I honestly got it to workout in and I figured I might as well get the real deal instead of those shitty weighted plates if I was gonna get one. Go big or go home!!

I did not get the soft shell to go in front of the plates though, those are designed to absorb any ricochet or splash from an impact.

Don’t shot me, ask a black op guy, I am just the messenger. Military bidding is a joke. HBO made a comedy drama about the procurement of the Bradley fighting vehicle.

I think the froze the shite out of it then heated it up to 160 etc to get it to frick up.

It is a comically accurate show and a must-watch for anyone who deals with government at any level

Eta: Pentagon Wars is the name of it

I know we talk about ARs and AKs all the time, but do we ever talk about body protection? Is it needed? Is it a waste? Is it considered paranoid to think/consider it?

well.

if you believe the only good commie is a dead commie... it is not paranoid.
(you would have already had your private armory stocked)

imo, we are on the cusp of civil war...an atypical conflict that may end quickly..or spiral out to WW3.
the justified BLM/anti-hate movement got compromised by the antifa/commie types a long time ago....
this is left versus right.
good versus evil.

the bad guys want nothing short of disorder/anarchy..and a complete rewrite of our way of life.

so..
these armed civil groups are popping up around the country... local police refer to them as "armed friendlies"

imo, body protection is good to have.

eventually antifa will be armed with more than just skateboards
Antifa just tried to murder someone in Albuquerque while tearing down a statue.

fwiw,
if anywhere a by a mob...personally i would always have a round in the chamber. in the video it looks like he had to rack.
...that delay could have easily been the end of him.
