Who did the HVAC replacement and what brand of HVAC he install? I assume you are happy with the job? Trying to compile a list of potential companies to get quotes from when I replace my 15 year old unit. My quote 2 years ago, from the company that performs preventive maintenance on my system, for a 16 Seer single stage Trane was $10,200.
Its a RHEEM system and yes I'm happy with it. Glaze Heating and Air in Gonzales sold it. I had a TRANE system that was 22 years old but the price for a system similar to what I had was twice as much as what Glaze quoted. With a 10 year warranty on the RHEEM system I could replace it twice for the cost of the TRANE. I think TRANE is the better system but not when you factor in cost.

Thanks for that info - I’ll put them my list to get HVAC replacement quotes from. Trane - my Trane that was installed in 93 when the house was built only lasted 12 years before the compressor in the condensing unit grounded out and had to be replaced, and what I can gather the average expected life of a Trane is no better than other manufacturers, though I will say it never has a single problem nor required a single service call in those 12 years.
Rheem=Rudd is as good as any other HVAC manufacturer. One thing I’ve learned in the past couple years In looking into this is that the experience and expertise of the installer(s), is far more important than the name/brand on the equipment.

We replaced ours two years ago. 5 ton unit, I think it was around $5,500. There's all sorts of options and features they'll try to sell you which could easily push the price over $10K.

People think I’m crazy recommending 5 quotes but I own some rental homes and have 10-15 hvac units total. I do this routinely. The mark up for labor and profit is 200-300%. You gotta ask around. Then you’ll hear the ‘it’s not about what machine but who installed it’...that’s mostly garbage too. On new install sure, on a replacement?
Guys think some prices are good because they get 2 quotes that are reasonably close. I’m telling you get 4-5 or more, most HVAC companies especially one of any decent size has one guy that’s a salesman. All he does is quote, you wanna catch the right guy at the right time. As said there’s plenty of companies that are happy to do fewer installs for a lot more money by going off of reputation and jacking up their rates. You get 4-5 it’ll like be a huge range, some like $5500-12,000 for a 5 ton.

Baldona speaks the truth and it saved me a ton of money a month ago. I got 5 quotes for a 2.5 ton and a 3.5 ton. Quotes I received:
$14,000
$17,000
$22,000
$26,000
$34,000
That’s insane amount of difference. All quotes were for Trane equipment including furnace replacement. The only difference was warranty. Here in Houston, the big companies are pushing 10 and 15 years parts and labor. While that sounds great, I’m not paying $3,000- $15,000 for basically insurance over 10 years. I’ll take my chances.

I live in Dallas in a pretty nice neighborhood. Always suspected that prices went up once the guy drove into the neighborhood and mentally jacked up the profit. Last repairman I had out here confirmed it. He was called out for a second opinion on a mansion in Highland Village (richest part of Dallas Jerry Jones lives there etc.) The previous quote they got was a full replacement for $75K this guy goes out and puts in a $500 part and fixes it. Also told me even if he had replaced the whole unit it would have been $17K. So yes I will be getting many quotes. Thanks for all the info guys.

Check out Milestone electric. They've usually been the cheapest quotes for electric work and AC for us. They replaced both of our systems two summers ago.

Just got my first estimate. 5 ton unit currently 15 year old 13 seer. Replace with 5 ton 14 seer for $7800 or 15 seer for $8500. This seems reasonable to me. Thoughts?
Oh replacing with American Standard.
Ask around if anyone has a scratch and dent new unit that still qualifies for a full warranty.

Thanks! I'll check them out this winter.

What company? I’m in Kingwood so I’ll add them to my list when I start getting quotes.

Avoid the big guys. John Moore and Abacus were the high bids. See my previous post for prices. Royal air will negotiate for cash prices.
Just realize this is like buying a car. The markup is huge and there is a lot of wiggle room. Be sure to understand what the price includes.

This guy (MardiGrasTexan) posted some great info on this site I’ll share with you.

Here's the answer for who has the best units currently on the market. In this order:
1)York (Johnson Controls)...currently BY FAR the best.
2)Rheem
3)Trane or Goodman
4)Everyone else sucks unless you're going with some high 18+ SEER/EER system. They all half-arse their low 14SEER equipment except for my top 3.
I manufacture HVAC equipment for all of the known brands. I am friends with all of the C-level officers in these companies. The company I work for was founded by the original person to ever put a/c in a residential home.
York (JCI products), including Luxaire and some others, are seriously over building their products right now. Rheem is also producing a high quality product especially their southwest models. Trane is a very good unit but they may fudge their SEER/EER ratings a little. Goodman was once junk but Daikin will have none of that if they're owning it. Goodman is now producing a very good unit.

you can change out your capacitor yourself for about $25 bucks. Youtube videos galore or have a service company do it for about $100 to $150. Not saying you might not need a new system but that is a pretty reasonable price to get you through the busy time of the year.

Unless JCI has changed the past few years, YORK was the biggest piece of junk on the market with their microchannel coils. They had class action lawsuits they were built so poorly.

I just had te HVAC guy out last week bc I thought something was wrong with mine (around 10 yrs) and he told me the contractor just hooked e up with the thermostat from hell.
Honestly... I hate how nothing new lasts at all. It infuriates me, tbh.
I feel like MeeMee and Poppy would have slit someone throat over an ac unit potentially being outived by a gd dog. Was “dog years” always the lifespan of an air conditioning unit bc I know literally every other gd thing in house lasts like a quarter of the time it did back when.
I just want one ting that lasts. And stop saying it’s bc it’s made in China, I bought shite that was made here. It all sucks. Everything sucks now.

Everything is 10x more complicated now than it used to be. Maw Maw and Paw Paws AC unit had a lot less electronics that new units. Everything is about making things cheaper and reliability is ignored. We are living in a society that will throw away broken things instead of trying to fix it.

This is true but also the DOE regulations governing minimum SEER ratings continues to increase as time goes on as well. My house started with a 10Seer unit and when I replaced mine, the minimum SEER rating was 14 (I added a 2-speed 18 seer when replaced). Like it or not the only think that can squeeze more SEER out of a unit is compressor design, coil design and the integrated electronic components to make it function as a system. Unfortunately for some people, that's the world we live in. It sucks.
