Here’s the scenario: You have to pick one musician from 1950-2020. They have to write ten songs by themselves. They have to perform those songs on a stage by themselves. They can have a microphone and any instruments they can play themselves. They have to entertain a packed crowd using nothing but their own talent and showmanship.

Who ya got?

Definitely tough to pick someone who is all a prolific songwriter, virtuoso instrumentalist, intriguing vocalist, and an exciting showman. In addition, they have to be great at an instrument and style of music which works well without accompaniment. That pretty much means they have to be experts at either acoustic guitar or piano and have a great voice.

That’s a really high bar.

Paul McCartney is my choice.

He was shockingly great live. That man makes magic with just an acoustic guitar, a wireless headset mic, and a looper pedal.

The answer is Prince, without a doubt. He had several full albums that featured him playing and singing EVERYTHING. His band's were elite, and at any moment he could go grab a band mate's instrument including drums and piano, and play it better than they did. Hell, Dave Grohl said Prince was a better DRUMMER than he was.
