Savage Shotguns for home defense?

Never had guns in the house. I own an antique Winchester .22, but it stays at my mom's house in Texas. Not opposed to them, but never felt the need and am not a hunter.
Part of my wiring may also be that my grandfather was shot and killed before my dad was even born. Not sure if that has ever been a conscious factor, but it's there.
Anyway, have been considering that it may be worthwhile to go ahead and get a starter kit to just have around the house. I expect this board to go all in on a handgun instead, and I am not dead set. Just pondering.
This is PB-related only in that my motivation has been ratcheted up by the current craziness. This will pass, but the bar has been set lower for the next time.
Anyway, if I did go with a shotgun, the Savage models seem like value for the money. This would not be an investment piece. Just a thing to upgrade from the baseball bat I keep under the bed.
Thoughts?

I own a pair of Savage hunting rifles...a .308 and a .22mag and have been pleased with them. Good value for the money. Never used one of their shotguns though. But I can tell you that Mossberg makes some great shotguns for the money, although its a little step up in price from Savage

Mossberg makes a really nice stainless trench sweeper. It's virtually indestructible.

Racking a pump shot gun is one hell of a deterrent. That sound alone makes a thug rethink their intentions.

KelTec KSG.
If you think you'll need more shots without reloading: KelTec KSG-25.

Update your OP with your budget if you want actionable info.

If you are using a shotgun for home defense, then just about anything that goes *BANG* when you pull the trigger will do.
If you are expecting a full-on societal dystopia... then that justifies the higher $$.
Brunelli and Mossberg are quality guns... and you can hunt while you are saving the world from Liberalism.![](https://images.tigerdroppings.com/Images/Icons/Iconusaflagsmiley.gif)

Savage I've always seen as a good rifle company.
I wouldn't venture to say much about their shotguns as I dont have any experience with them; nor are they well known for their shot guns.

Based off of that criteria
I'd go with a mossburg
or something along the lines of a Remington 870

Remington 870 pump action 12 gauge. Easy to use, very reliable, and friendly priced.
The pump sound in itself is a deterrent to anyone with half a brain. Because they know they are eating some type of lead if they come through that door. Practically impossible to miss close quarters with a shotgun.
If you want to spend a good chunk of money and don't care about having a pump sound warning the Benelli M4 used by the Marine Corps is a very nice semi-automatic shotgun.

Go with a Mossberg 500 or a Remington 870.

Make a beautiful mess of things inside of a structure. Buckshot or a slug make short work of an intruder.
Mossberg 500A riotgun is what I own. Shorten barrel, pistol grip.
Happy hunt'n

Heard my old Daddy say many times, "Son, Savage don't make no trash".

I've been pretty happy with the Kel Tec KS7 I bought a few weeks ago... Kel Tec KS7

If you're looking for cost and just an introduction to having a shotgun, i'd do a remington 870, mossberg 500, or the savage 320.
all wieldable, pump, holds more than one or two rounds, fires reliably, good to get used to firing, and shouldn't run you much more than $300.
not to knock anybody else's gun choices, but i've shamed people with $1k+ benellis, browning, etc. with a $300 R870 express i got from walmart while dove hunting or skeet shooting. not a compliment to my skills (i'm mediocre with a shotgun at best,) more of a mocking of their waste of money and lack of talent.

You need a pistol. No offense, but you sound like someone who would be rather easy to disarm from a shotgun (more to grab).
Get a .357 Magnum. No frills, no jamming and the best stopping power of any round.

Yeah I have an old .22 rifle. I got laughed at on the Outdoor Board. So I added a 9mm pistol and this weekend I’m buying a shotgun.

I have a Mossberg 500 12 gauge but I am thinking about buying a .410 auto loader if anyone makes one. I haven't looked yet.
