JR's draft stock was plummeting during the course of his last year here.
Teams were dropping everyone in coverage, and not rushing him, requiring him to be deadly accurate. This worked between the 25's, but couldn't get it done in the red zone.
Plenty of open space b/w JR beyond the LOS, but he refused to run.
We were playing Tennessee over there when he decided he would use his legs. Look it up. As soon as he showed the ability to run, it completely changed our offense, opened up passing lanes, etc.
Ironically, his legs are the reason he got drafted No. 1 overall.

You don’t know much about football do you. You keep blaming the raiders but have yet to respond to repeated posts about how HE himself screwed up. I wonder why that is??????

I remember, and was thinking at the time, JR is trying to improve his draft stock. I always wondered, earlier in the season, why he didn't run more. He could have been awesome with his big body.

He rarely got blitzed, b/c DC's were worried that they couldn't get him down and his arm was strong enough to still hit an open receiver.
He had something like 125 yards rushing in that TN game, then averaged close to 70 yards after that per game, even including loss yardage for the few times he got sacked.
Jimbo began to even incorporate running plays for him.
I never got a straight answer on the mystery of why he never ran before that TN game, even knowing some that were on staff and in the program at the time, but I have my suspicions.

They went to gether like fire and gasoline
Jamarcus needed to be held accountable and pushed
Instead he was given a shite ton of guaranteed money and drafted to the shite show that was Al Davis' Raiders

It was not a good location for him to land.

Well. I mean. I think it was relatively obvious to everyone he was a 1st round talent.
But, as he proved very quickly, 1st round talent and 1st round motivation are not one in the same.
That dude cashed his 1st check and was like, "I'm good'.
Frankly, I'm kinda surprised that doesn't happen more often.

Its his fault first and foremost. However, I do agree the Raiders were probably the worst team in the NFL for him to go to. He might have succeeded elsewhere, if developed correctly.

Maybe. I don't think he had the work ethic or smarts to do that. Had he done it things might have been different. He certainly looked outstanding as a senior.

half-way true. while I'll contend that Oakland was the WORST possible place for him to go, JaMarcus definitely didn't help himself once he got is No.1 Overall Pick money. His work ethic (which was already bad) tanked even further and he tried to get along on his talent alone!
While JM2 was very talented, he never had the mind for football and he never tried to expand his knowledge of the game and schemes and whatnot.
A bad mix of both.

Jamarcus’s problem was the “purple drink” problem. I understand after his Uncle died he got out of control with it.

No it wasn’t. But still he should have worked a lot harder than he did for all that money he got.

JaMarcus should have been drafted by a team that had great winning tradition, structure, and team character. A team that he himself could build great character and develop self-esteem while there. He could sit for a few years while learning how to be a real QB, and learn how to read defenses in recognizing how to go through his progressions when the main WR target isn't open. That team should have been a New England, but because of his big arm talent he would never have lasted that long in the draft for them to pick him in the late 1st round.

“Purple Drank” and Cheetos killed his career, not the Raiders.

There are three things that are facts when it comes to Jamarcus Russell:
First, the Raiders were a horrible team to play for. They would have made anyone look bad.
Second, Jamarcus made plenty of mistakes, and he has never avoided assuming responsibility for his failure in the NFL.
Third, we Tiger fans need to stop beating up Jamarcus for the Raiders debacle. Let the Raiders fans bitch about him if they want. We need to forgive Jamarcus and support him for the fine job he did for us at LSU.

He wasn’t consistent enough to be drafted that high. Statistically, he wasn’t outstanding, but he had a high ceiling. I think that situation and the expectations were bad for him. It was a reach based on his level of production.

He’s a great example that talent isn’t enough to make you elite at the highest level. Perrilloux too. Undeniable talents but when you grow up and stop playing against boys, everyone is equally as talented. I think the structure of college and his uncle probably helped him keep his weight down and helped him be accountable. Take those structures away and give him millions, and yea, watch the implosion.
I think Perrilloux was even more immature in high school/college than Russell. Perrilloux should have been a top QB but his lack of maturity was worse than Russell.

he had 71 yards rushing against UT, then 48 yards rushing TOTAL the rest of the year over 4 games.
where are you getting these rushing numbers from?
