As China tames the coronavirus epidemic now ravaging other countries, its success is giving rise to an increasingly strident blend of patriotism, nationalism and xenophobia, at a pitch many say has not been seen in decades.

quote:

A restaurant in northern China put up a banner celebrating the virus’s spread in the United States. A widely circulated cartoon showed foreigners being sorted into trash bins. African residents in the southern city of Guangzhou, including Mwamba, have been corralled into forced quarantines, labeled as dangers to the country’s health.

quote:

Foreigners are not the only targets of China’s swelling nationalism. Chinese people deemed insufficiently admiring of the government have been subjected to vitriolic online attacks by China’s army of “little pinks,” a nickname for the generation of young digital warriors who pounce on any criticism of the Communist Party.

It's just a matter of time.

That’s interesting.

The lemmings really believe the outside world caused this and not their own self created shithole.

They are like progressives in the United States

Chinese nationalism And racism has ALWAYS been a thing. Just under the surface. The great masses of uneducated Chinese are not known for their knowledge and appreciation for the outside world. The Communist Party always rallies these people when they need them. Mao didn’t kill 65 million people without some goons.

Some expressions of anti-foreigner sentiment have made no pretense about public health concerns. Last month, a porridge restaurant in the northeastern city of Shenyang displayed a banner that read: “Celebrating the epidemic in the United States and wishing coronavirus a nice trip to Japan.”

They seem very nice. I wonder how Lebrun James would feel about statements like this?

This is the truest sign that real, significant, generational-defining problems are in the horizon for China.

Things like fear of outsiders, while unfortunate, pop up all the time in virtually every country in the world. As public sentiment constantly ebbs and flows, all countries go through periods where they are less trusting of outsiders and quicker to otherize those with different characteristics. It’s not ideal, but it happens. And most countries grow out of it without anything dangerous boiling over to the surface.

THE EXCEPTION to that is when the hate is government directed and enforced. And that is exactly what the citizen score system is being designed to do; to diminish the validity of anyone who does not perfectly toe the party line. With this new system in place, we are going to see a new generation of full blown, unabashed, hardcore CCP zealots. And they will be the people who will not tolerate non-conformity.

I know the “cool” thing to do for US youths is to attack the perceived rising tide of authoritarianism in our country. I get it, we’re not perfect, and rebelling against the norms of the previous generation can be fun. It happens, fine. But the simple truth is that there is no other way to rationalize this behavior other than acknowledging it as the absolute epitome of US privilege. Anyone with an ounce of perspective can see that China is the global epicenter of authoritarian uprising; that’s where we need to be concerned. Because 20 years from now, you can be damn sure the red dragon is going to rear it’s ugly head.

People used to call me a xenophobe. Truth is, im not. I just happen to think that America is the best country on earth and all the other countries aren’t as good. That used to be called patriotism

The ironic thing about this is that Africa will still welcome their money

Africa has zero principles when it comes to this.

Let China and Russia duke it out for that rock, let’s make the America’s Great Again. If trinket makers want to stay in bat soup land, tariff them to match cost of doing business in America’s and require quarantine/sterilization of all containers entering from Asia

All other essential industries need to move to our continent, and the democratic Asian markets are welcomed as well. If Europe and Africa want to sell their soul to China after seeing how it turned out for us, be my guest

Let me know when its southern or central China.

Northern China is going to be very closely aligned with the CCP.

The dirty little secret of China is that they're not as unified as you may think.

I think once we get past the current mess Trump is going to demonstrate to China that we have some leverage of our own. I doubt he will do anything militarily but we are capable of making things uncomfortable for them economically.

China puts up a bold front but a good deal of that country is third world and we are still superior, especially if we put an end to our own politicians selling us out to them, which I think there is going to be a push in that direction. We can't allow them to get away with this unscathed
