My aunt met him while my uncle was stationed in California, one of his lackeys invited her back to Manson's place. Glad she declined or I may not have any cousins.

I wasn't in Los Angeles, but this was before 24 hour news and we (the rest of the world) didn't get the news/entertainment coverage we get today so I don't remember it being a national horror and only became interesting as the Manson story unfolded. But with Viet Nam raging and civil disorder common, there was a lot more interesting stuff going on.

Probably more coverage today than 50 years ago.

Yup, this.

Didn't know about Manson until the movie came out. Was in Jr. High School then.

I was 9 yrs old at the time and lived in small town KY. I remember my mom starting to lock the doors at night after that.

Has anyone seen the Stephen Sondheim musical "Assassins"?

One of the assassins he used in the play was Squeaky Fromme, one of Charlie's Girls.

Squeaky Fromme's monplogue from the play
The song "Unworthy of your love" in the play is sung by Hinkley (Ronald Reagan) and Fromme (Gerald Ford) for their failed assassination attemps on the presidents.

I was 9. The late 60’s were a turbulent time. MLK, RFK, space, race riots, Manson etc. Glad it’s behind us.

To me Manson was just a psycho killer and not hard to comprehend compared to the other family members who mostly came from stable even nice families with no clear inclination toward cold blooded mass murder and other acts they would commit.

Manson never had a good chance in life. Never had a proper Mom or Dad. Sexually abused and raped at a young age - more than once. Criminal life and spent most of his life, even his youthful life, in prison.

He was a "long shot" candidate for selling a few songs or otherwise getting into the 1960s Los Angeles music scene but nothing panned out there for him.

Yes, he was mentally sick and an evil man, but, we can see from his personal history how he became that kind of man. Even so, Charles Manson must take personal responsibility for the fact that he did freely choose to do evil instead of good.

The moon landing, Manson murders and Woodstock all happened within a month of each other.

Hurricane Camille (which was considered the worst hurricane ever, for decades afterward) and the first 100% confirmed Zodiac killings also occurred during this stretch.

And the Millennial Generation just can't seem to understand why the country didn't vote for Hubert Humphrey a few months beforehand. Nixon had to be brought in to beat back the people who were committing all this lawlessness.

I remember being on the miss gulf coast vacation with my parents and listening to it all. I think hurricane Camille hit a few days later.

if you are going to read helter Skelter than you also need to read The Family by Ed Sanders. He casts some doubt on the Helter Skelter theory and point out some unanswered questions about the LaBianca murders. He does not provide a real alternative other than point out some things that are out of place.
