The TR ran into the ship I was on back in 1996. That wasn't a fun experience.

1. It was an aircraft carrier full of young to middle age fit people with a few old codgers.
2. Had he isolated the codgers, along with a few dozen known to have asthma, he would have had almost zero problem.
3. He was a very popular commander (my son-in-law served with him about three years ago.) That does not make him "a damn fine officer". If he was such a good officer he would have handled this better.
4. Crozier caused a hole in our defenses to become known to our enemies.
5. You're right, Modly is an idiot. Reminds me of Nicholson's character in A Few Good Men. Especially when Tom Cruise's character said, "I think he WANTS to tell me he ordered the code red."

By exposing readiness issues with the carrier. You don't talk troop numbers, deployments, and movements in specific terms. Yes they are posted for ship's personnel, but all that is subject to change and expected to not be broadcast. It's a military thing.

Captain was wrong for leaking the letter. The SecNav was wrong for going give his speech. Both acted inappropriately for their station, both should be removed.

This is violated all of the time, unfortunately. In 1993, we were in Singapore (I believe) aboard the USS Kitty Hawk. My buddy called his mom and she said CNN reported that we were headed to Somalia. The next day, everyone was recalled and we were steaming to Africa.

7. If Acting Naval Sec Modly, is not asked to step down I will be shocked. To fly out to Guam just to rip Cozier to the Sailors and Marines who clearly backed him., was extremely arrogant and tone-deaf. This guy is a PR nightmare! Cudos to Def. Sec. Esper for pulling him in by the ears and making him apologize. I can 100% guarantee know one in the Navy respects Modly at all right now.

This was the part I just couldn't understand. I guess he felt that the Navy higher ups had been undermined and he needed to go down there and assert their authority but it just seemed like real overkill. He got his point across by firing the captain, going down there and rubbing it in everyone's face made him look very petty IMO.

My take is that I am still waiting on an explanation about why the Navy allowed port call in Vietnam and let sailors off the ship while a global pandemic was raging.

Aircraft carrier port calls are sometimes very symbolic gestures. I've read that the Navy was showing the flag in Vietnam to encourage them to reject China's latest maneuvering that was intended to bring Vietnam more into the Chinese sphere of influence.

Yeah, it wasn't his call.

quote:

For a time, Navy officials discussed aborting the visit as signs pointed to an impending pandemic, said officials familiar with the discussion. But the carrier’s marquee port call had been months in the planning, and both U.S. officials and Vietnamese officials wanted it to take place, the officials said.

The visit was part of broader U.S. national security considerations. To counter growing Chinese influence in the region, officials have pointed to the importance of ties with Vietnam, particularly after the Philippines pushed earlier this year to curtail ties with the U.S. military.

Neighboring Cambodia has been tightening ties with China. The Roosevelt’s arrival in Da Nang would be a potent display of U.S. commitment.

To give the Captain a fair shake, with little information, one has to assume he had BEEN going through channels and had kept being stonewalled. In the meantime, each & every sailor/marine was more and more at risk. One of those "I tried doing it the right way numerous times, no results, so frick it ( "it" being his career)".

6. Cozier stuck his neck out for his Sailors and Marines, he could have kept his mouth shut

He turned into a huge Karen. Sailors on a combat ready vessel should be way above average in regards to physical fitness, than the average American. If he had done just the slightest amount of reading, he would have been confident that mostly the elderly and those with 3 co-morbidities or more were the most at risk.

None of which would ever be serving on a combat ready carrier.

He freaked out, and acted like a soccer mom. Which raised HUGE RED FLAGS about his ability to order his men into harms way, if ever required.

Capt Crozier is a leader, he knew exactly what would happen to himself but he was responsible for the safety & well being of his crew. Instead, the Navy either turned a deaf ear, or were not moving swiftly enough, and left him no choice to protect his crew.

It's clear to most Americans that a good man sacrificed his career to save others. Captain Crozier did what he felt he had to do to protect his crew.

People pointing out spelling and grammar errors are doing so because they have no real argument to any of your points.

Sidenote: Modly looks like a total twat waffle.

I'm sure that came from the govt though. We give general locations, however not specific times or locations. I mean it's not really hard to figure, but as far as I ever knew it was taboo.

I couldn't imagine serving now with internet and females on board. Probably not a lot of secrets anymore.
