God bless Tom Dempsey. I was 12 years old but I was in the stadium when he kicked his field goal.
A few years ago some guy posted on the saints board that he was about that age and at the game with his mother. When The Lions took the lead she figured the game was over, so she decided to leave. As they were exiting the stadium they heard this great roar from the crowd....

Somebody beat his 63 yard kick?

Shame.

RIP Tom Dempsey

Matt Prater hit a 64 yarder

he had the benefit of doing it in the thin, mile high air of Denver

and also did it at the end of the 1st half of what would turn into a blowout Broncos win... not a game-winner at the buzzer like Dempsey's

also... 63 has been tied 3 times

David Akers (SF) hit from 63 in GB

Sebastian Janikowski (OAK) hit from 63 in DEN*

Jason Elam (DEN) hit from 63 over JAX in DEN*

the thin air of Denver was a factor in 3 of the 4 official 63+ yd FGs hit since Dempsey set the record

ETA: I'm fairly certain 64 has even been surpassed in the preseason... but that's preseason so it doesn't count to the official NFL records

ETA2: in fact... of the 5 kicks made in the NFL regular season from 63 or greater... only 1 was done at the end of the 4th quarter and it was Dempsey's... the others were all at the end of the 2nd quarter

The a-hole Denver kicker took a free shot at the end of the half and took great care to line up precisely one yd longer than Dempsey

The irony is that with the thin Denver air it would have been good from 70

in my quick research... that story was true about Elam's tying kick back in 1998... not Prater's record-breaking kick in 2013

Elam made sure it was lined up on the yard marker needed to make sure it would tie the record

Met him on Canal Street during Mardi Gras going way back. A genuine nice guy.

No. Some of us can be sad and use logic simultaneously though. He did have Alzheimers and was in an assisted living facility before this. His quality of life was low enough for his family to DNR him rejecting treatment for low oxygen levels even after improving enough to return to the AL facility.

I thought there was an article like 2 days ago saying he was ok

My grandpa had it. Was doing fine for a week. Then had trouble breathing one day. Went to hospital at 3 and dead by 6.

Arguably the highlight of the first two decades of the otherwise mostly futile Saints’ existence.

RIP TD
