Red Drum,Flapping Pierre-thanks for the info.
Ignore HollyWood-he’s an ignorant pos, flipping burgers for a living does that to people.

Several posts mention shortages of ICU nurses. If administrators would put orderlies in ICU to help turn and pull up all the 300-400 lb. pts. they could maybe keep more nurses.
I did 31 years ICU and the numbers of morbidly obese patients was mind-boggling my last 10 years.
We had nurses tearing their rotator cuffs or injuring their backs.I was often the only male on my shift so I was the defacto orderly.I wrecked both my shoulders and was big part of the reason I quit.
I saw several very smart hardworking young women quit because they couldn’t handle the physical part of the job.
The last one I precepted was good example,highly intelligent,hardworking,aggressive about learning,great bedside manner,compassionate.Only problem,she was only 5’1” and 105 lbs.She liked the work,just couldn’t handle the 300lb+ land whales.

Thanks for taking questions. You mention that obese patients have more reason for concern. i have alot of muscle mass that causes me to be 'overweight' in terms of BMI. that leaves me a little uncertain where i stand in terms of covid risk.

Mask is a small part of it, meticulously washing hands and not touching face is more important. If you wear a mask, it will live on that for hours to days, so when you take it off you have it on your hands.

Which is why reusing PPE is such a stupid idea.

BMI isn’t perfect and you’re a great example. If you’re healthy, active, and the only reason your BMI is elevated is due to muscle, you’re fine.

This is consistent with my nurse friend at OLOL who is working the top level COVID unit had told us as well.

From OLOL to medical staff today:
At the beginning of this pandemic, we attempted to carefully message to our teams that we had enough PPE to keep them safe. Unfortunately, at this same time, we don’t have enough PPE to get through this event without conservation.

Nice to see a hospital admin being honest about PPE.

Are the majority of the black men obese also?

Many black guys have a relatable life to Italian men. Hang out in groups together much of the day in urban areas, would be prime to catch and spread this virus. So I’m wondering if it’s just hitting the obese guys or their population in general?

Many black
Yes

Not saying the skinny black people aren’t also getting it, but our hospital admits are almost exclusively obese people if they are under 70
