Outkick has learned ESPN has made an eight figure offer to current New Orleans Saints quarterback Drew Brees to become the network’s Monday Night Football lead analyst. Brees’s ascendance to the Monday Night Football booth would begin as soon as he retires from the NFL.
The 41 year old quarterback debated retirement this off-season before electing to return for at least one more year. Brees, who presently makes $25 million a year this year and is also on track to make $25 million next year, recently donated $5 million to Louisiana charities. He’s a beloved figure in the NFL and there is a nearly universal belief among television executives that he would be fantastic in the broadcast booth.
While he has at least one year remaining on the field, an agreement between Brees and ESPN would solidify ESPN’s Monday Night Football booth for the future. In seeking to lock up Brees ESPN is attempting to avoid a potential bidding war with NBC, which might be interested in Brees as well.
While the two sides have not agreed to terms yet, the plan would be for a deal between Brees and ESPN to remain quiet until Brees officially retires. That’s because there is some trepidation inside Disney about announcing an eight figure yearly deal in the midst of the coronavirus shut down of the company’s sports properties, which could soon lead to layoffs. Not to mention the awkwardness of a player who is still currently playing already having agreed to a post-playing career job in the media.
Since Brees has at least one year left on the field, this would leave ESPN with a decision to make about what to do with its broadcast booth for the 2020 season as well. Do they stick with Joe Tessitore and Booger McFarland for another season? Bring in a new crew for one season before making way for Brees? That’s still to be determined.

I see Brees as a Steve Young type. I’m not sure a color guy would be his thing but I could be wrong.

If Romo can dissect a play and call them before they happen, Brees should be able to blow him out of the water. Would just depend how well he comes across on TV.

Its a hard gig, and there is a reason Romo is making big money. Its definitely not a given brees could do it as well as Tony. This isnt like qbing in the nfl

Brees replacing Booger would be hilarious, given how much he's disrespected Brees in the past! Every time Drew accomplishes something, it seems like BM is there talking about how Brady and Manning are greater.

I could see Brees in a studio analyst type setting, he has great insight. It’s hard to talk for 2-3 hours straight

I don’t know if he would be as gregarious as a Tony Romo or a Peyton Manning, but his knowledge of the game is obviously second to none, and there is a sincerity and resoluteness that I think would work really well.
But anybody paired with Tess is destined to sink. I don’t particularly hate him or anything. He’s okay. Theres just something lackluster about him.

I've always expected Brees to come back as an OC or QB coach on Payton's staff. A move to TV would be interesting.

Drew Brees will be successful at anything he decides to do after his playing days.
Peter King recently commented that Brees has been getting together annually will local businessmen in New Orleans where they plan and execute charitable local projects for the upcoming year.
He asked Brees why they do it. Brees said someone has to do it.
Peter King went on to say that Brees had political aspirations.
King believes that Brees will one day be the President of the United States.

I think it is his last year, but having 15 million a year waiting for him at ESPN will probably be enough for him to bail.

A small market QB has never become President of the US.

It seems like a lot of travel and time away from home for someone with so many young kids.

The NFL has a program for players who want to transition to media where they train and practice color commentary and studio work. I guarantee you ESPN has already heard Drew do color commentary for multiple games. They’d aren’t making this offer blindly.

It's like 2-3 days a week for 1/3rd of the year.

Why does HOF QB have to be a prerequisite for broadcasting?
I'm sure there are a bunch of really smart OL that would be nice to hear. Think like Jeff Saturday

Drew will spend time catching up with his family and enjoying being a dad.
Its no clear if hew ill be in New Orleans or San Diego.
If New Orleans he might be coerced to run for political office some day. He would win any election in a landslide.

Brees is going to be so cringe in that role
Posted on 3/29/20 at 4:23 pm to tigersbb
He’d have carte blanche to do anything in New Orleans. I feel like that’s a much easier spring board to launch a political career than anywhere else.

Rumor is Steve Young or Kurt Warner will full the role until Brees calls it quits

Take a pay cut and put in more hours? I doubt it
