Watching the CV numbers and Italy is continually outpacing everyone in all the numbers. The only things I can come up with is the fact that they live on top of each other with little room (at least the cities). And their culture of hugging and kissing/close body contact with everyone.

Any other ideas why Italy seems to be a dumpster fire of CV?

Smoking is a big one.
Close connections to china.
Healthcare system that allows everyone a bed and puts a greater strain on their system.

None of this is unique to Italy. I agree with OP; it’s very strange.

It's the oldest population in Europe. Think I read earlier that the average age in Italy is like 48 years old

Ironically, they're the oldest in Europe because they lead a generally healthy lifestyle in regards to diet, like most mediterranean countries

They do have a very large elderly population, which the virus is most fatal to unfortunately.

Add to all this a general incompetence and inability to do things efficiently or correctly.

Italy is a complete outlier at this point. I think it has little relevance to the US.

Interesting to see if they still hold the title at the end of 2020.

Check out the air quality of northern Italy, it's the worst in all of Europe, same goes for the region in China where this all started. Folks from those areas already had jacked up lungs which is a big reason those areas are getting hit worse than others, imo anyway.

Sounds like a good guess to me.

They live on top of each other. (Italy is about the size of California. But has damn near twice the population density.)

It’s a very social, touchy feely society. The love to hug and kiss everyone and always have huge family get togethers.

They're just a couple of weeks ahead. America will be worse than Italy soon

They are saying this is one of the major factors in the spread of the virus in Italy. Italians revere their older generation and often have multiple generations living in the same household with grandma/grandpa living with their grown children who in turn have children.
