btw,
If you didn't see the Shogun mini-series when it first came out...
Give it a watch.
People probably think it's cheesy, 80's, Richard Chamberlain, blah, blah, blah...
I was expecting it to be dated and cheesy. But rewatched it a few years ago and it really holds up.
Great TV miniseries. I mean it has Mifune in it for godssake...Seven Samurai, Yojimbo, Throne of Blood.
You could have at least given me a thumbs up for snaking me...LOL

Oh, sorry.
Didn't scroll down through the thread. Replied a third time without looking.

There are 2 movies that I have no idea why Hollywood hasnt either made or done a mega-money remake of:
1. William Adams: the english man turned samurai and inspiration for James Clavelle's Shogun novel ( an older movie/short series was made but its time for a new full-length remake)
2. Yasuke: black samurai.

Not only did Richard Chamberlain nail his role
I might have to watch it. He is so different than how the book portrays that I was turned off from watching it just because of him.
He looks like the sissy shogun to me.

The Seven Samurai and Ran are the two best , Akira Kurosawa was an absolute master of cinema.

Red Sun, also known as Soleil rouge (1971), is a Charles Bronson western with Toshirô Mifune, Alain Delon, Ursula Andress and Capucine. It was one of my favorites growing up. Shanghai Knights stole a lot from it.

If the re-made this today a good portion of this board would be bitching about SJWs.

Did the emperor have a guard composed of the best Samurai?
Ehh no it didn’t really work like that. Samurai were more like feudal lords and less like knights. Hell a lot of times Samurai were actively fighting against the emperor. I’m sure sometimes some of them protected the emperor

Japanese conceptions of divinity don’t follow Western precepts.

I thought Ken Watanabe as Katsumoto stole that movie.
"What happened to the soldiers at Thermopalye?"
"Dead to the last man"
I'll forget about Last Samurai for a few years, then stumble upon it and reminded how badass that movie is

For some reason it seems like it's not cool to like The Last Samurai but I think it's amazing and I thought Cruise was amazing
My only problem with it was *spoiler* is that Cruise should have died. The movie would have been 10x better.
I think Ran might be my favorite followed by Yojimbo/sanjuro.

Seven Samurai is probably the right answer but my personal favorite:
